...just curious if anyone has any "hands on" experience with this discontinued but unique mic pre (no need to respond if you haven't actually used one of these, as I'm well aware of the negative attitude many have towards any form of "mic modelling" technology)...feel free to chime in if you do...thanks!

Hiya mate, there have been some people using it because I've seen it mentioned here quite a few times. Give the search function a try, and don't limit it to the mic forum because some will be in The Rack. Hope you find something helpful! :)

Thanks!...but actually I've already done that, and oddly most of the references to this mic pre were made by people who had no "hands on" experience, but simply saw no use for the modelling functions...only a couple of people actually owned the MMP-2 and were quite pleased with the sound of the pres, but had problems hooking up the digital output...I was hoping to hear more recent input and any info that might resolve the SPDIF issues...

Spdif issue

Hey Kidvybes,

As you know I have the MMP-2.
Regarding the Spidf issue, the MMP-2 is a little quirky in that regard. When I tried to record to an Mbox, I couldn't get the MBox to recognize the digital signal, but when I recorded to a hard disk recorder like the Creative Labs Jukebox3 or even to a MiniDisk I didn't have any problems whatsoever. My feeling is that it is a bits issue. The MMP-2 is supposed to be 24 bits, and It can record up to 96 Khz. I am not sure if it dithers down to 20 bits and maybe that's why the Mbox doesn't recognize it.

That said, I think the pres sound pretty good and the conversion is also good.

A couple years ago I recorded a live concert of my trio and the recording came out so well that we decided to use the recording for a Live Concert CD.

I welcome any knowledge from any enduser regarding this Spdif issue.

Peace
Marco
