Ok, I am focking back. After 4 long months of un-employement here in Munich, I finally got a damn job. And to top it off I got a DAMN GREAT job. I earn over twice the money from my last job. I have to go through a 2 month INTENSIVE AS HELL training program flying all over Europe to do so, but it is interesting as hell.

ANYWAY..... I have taken a leave of absence from home recording because I simply had no more money to afford the toys I wanted/needed. But now I am back with a brand new bank account and I am looking to go on a spree. (well kind of).

So I pulled out my Roland JV 1010 and my 2x2 Midi interface, and started up my Logic Audio Platinum software and decided to refrech my Midi sequencing knowledge. Well I remembered with full on force that I never really got the completel hang of it in the first place.

Now my problem is.......

How in the hell do I get the Roland to play the same sound that I recorded it on?

So far, I have for example.... recorded the drums on Channel 10 (of course) and the bass guitar parts on Midi channel 1, and done any extra, violin type, sounds on channels 3 and 4. Each time, with the exception for the drums sounds, I have just literally flipped through the patches until I found a sound that "sounded like the bass guitar sound I wanted" or whatever sound I was looking for.

Anyway, I then record a 250 measure song and edit it, add the Midi effects (reverb chorus etc..) that are possible with the Logic GM Mixer, quantisize it here and there, blah blah blah... then SAVE it.

Then the next day, I come back and turn it all back on, then OPEN the song I recorded the previous day and hit play to hear my masterpiece.... and the bass guitar is now a steel drum, and the violins are a helicopter, but the drums always stay DRUMS exyctly as I recorded them. WHY??????????????????

And of course I didn't write down which patches I used, so i have to flip through again and try to find something else that kind of sounded like yesterday.... sometimes never finding it again at all. In the Audio Logic Manuel it says..... "blah blah blah and now notice that when you change the patches in the software the number canges on your sound module." Well that doesn't happen at all with me.

Honestly I would pay someone if they would just send me an e-mail with their phone number in it so I could CALL them and have them walk me through this thing. I am sure it would take all of 5 minutes to figure out. But after 6 months of owning and completely throwing everything I have into this software and sound module.... I still have NO IDEA how to make it work together. UGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, thanks guys,

Mike

Mike, sounds like you are playing stuff back in General Midi mode that was recorded in Patch Mode. On the JV1010, the red light should be next to perform, not GM. If you play a demo or something GMidi, the JV1010 will stay in that mode and not adjust itself back to Performance, you have to do it manually.

did you select the patches from the screen? as in an environment?
or did you selct them with msb and program change in the mixer?

If you did select them with program change, then you are out of luck.

If you used an environment, simply clicking on the track in the arrange window should fix that problem.

THere is also an option to send midi on startup or something like that. CLick that and restart. It might fix it.

Perform Mode

Nah, I always use it in perform mode. Otherwise I would notr be able to get the Midi-click. I never even mess around with the other options.

What i think the problem MIGHT be is...

Is there a default position that the "CATAGORY / BANK" knob and the "PART / PATCH RX CHANNEL" knob should be placed at upon starting up the Logic Software? What i mean is... I never think about the knobs on logic.... when I want a bass guitar sound, I just switch the BANK knob over to GUITAR/BASS and then press around on the patch selector on the MIDI keyboard. I never even mess with the PART knob. Is that the problem?

You have to select your patches with Logic, not by twiddling the knobs on the JV, if you want your song to remember your patches. The only alternative is to save your patches as a performance, remember which performances go with which songs, and manually recall the performances yourself for each song. (or, of course, remember every single patch and manually recall)

It's much easier to select your patches remotely, within Logic:

Open an environment window. Now go to that box on the left and make sure it says 'midi instr.' If not, click and hold on that triangle and select it from the menu which pops up. Now click on the icon that represents the JV- the box with 16 squares on it. Now select Options>Define Custom Bank Messages. This is in the Logic manual under 'Defining your Own Custom Bank Commands' in 'The Environment' chapter.

You need the MSB and LSB for each bank. My JV-1010 manual has this information is on page 33 under the heading 'Changing Sounds From An External MIDI Device'.

Once you have this setup, all you have to do is click on a midi track in the arrange window, make sure the 'PRG' checkbox is checked, click and hold on the first number to the right of the 'PRG' checkbox to select your bank, and then click and hold on the second number to select your patch. The names of the patches will not match; however, you can automatically insert the proper names fairly easily using Sound Diver.

Remember to save an 'Autoload' or else you'll have to set all this up every time.

Couple of little gremlins to watch out for: gotta be in performance mode(I think); when I first open a saved song, sometimes I have to click each midi track to get the saved patch up (not sure why- this may be something I'm not doing right).

This isn't near as hard as it may seem when reading it all at once. When you get in there, working step by step, it's not that complicated.

Thanks a million

Ok now THAT was a cool answer. Judging by how easliy you answered it, I was making another DUMB SHIT mistake. I will go try it all now, and get back to you if it works ok. Again... THANKS A MILLION!!!!
