Mainly for Vox but also guitar, what does everyone reckon is the most useful box of tricks out of these two?

For guitar, the Joe Meek is very good, decent sounds, but I've never run a mike through it (it's got phantom power from what I remember). As for the Roland, not heard of this model before, but some say it has the edge from a mike point of view over the Joe Meek, even though it is essentially a guitar processor.

Any truth in this?

Whoever told you this is crazy. So basically, they're telling you that the Joe Meek, a mic pre, is going to be better at guitars and the Roland, a guitar processor, is going to be a better mic pre? That just defies common sense.

You're considering dropping several hundred on a guitar processor to use as a mic pre (which is crazy) but you're unwilling to consider the advice of many people to just get a DMP3 or a VTB-1, which is much less money? Why are you even posting to this forum at all? You're asking for advice and ignoring every bit of it.

steady on now!

allow me to retort:

first of all, any forum is simply that - a place where people discuss stuff. There will be a mixture of people, those who are new to all this and people who know more. But we are all musicians.

secondly, any advice given, howsoever appreciated it might be, is just that - advice. Nothing is set in stone. So, if one guy says to another guy, "you should get this" it doesn't mean that the other guy should just go and get it straight away. I am a great believer in using things for some other purpose than that for which they were created, I've had some of my best results experimenting with gear, trying out things that seem crazy as you say on paper. My personal belief is that one should get as many options as you can before making a choice, even ones that some think 'crazy'.

So, I value everyone's comments (even yours) and they each get me a little closer, but they are still just ideas, opinions etc. The whole point of this forum is the sharing of ideas...isn't it?

Sorry if this pisses you off man, but there we are!

So tell us why you're weighing up the virtues of a discontinued channel strip against a guitar processor ... and we can advise you.

Oh, by the way, in all seriousness, who are the 'some' who 'say' these things to you? Because anyone involved in music who advised me to plug my mics into my multi-fx would get a stern slap around the chops and told to pull themselves together. :)

Regardless, theflyingfoal, you're getting awful advice from someone if they told you to get the Roland over the JoeMeek for mic preamplification.

yes, I know some avant-garde guys who use gear in unpredictable ways. Some of their results are amazing and sometimes dreadful, they're not exactly purists, and a lot of their ideas fly in the face of perceived wisdom.

I am trying to find out if there if a piece of kit that I can get for both vocals AND guitar - it seems that the best solution is to get 2, one for vocals and one for guitar, but budget is tight and I'm still hopeful that I might be able to kill two birds with one stone. These guys often connect loads of units together in a long chain, but I can't afford that luxury

Have you considered the possibility that they are screwing with you?

I use the GP-100 as part of my guitar rig. As far as I know, the input is high impedance, unbalanced, and doesn't have phantom power.
