I'm pretty new to this stuff, so I hope this isn't a stupid question... I'm recording a band demo with a Roland VS-840EX. I would like to mix down to my computer so I can burn the demo onto CD. What do I need to accomplish this?

Re: VS840 to Computer

Hey Grobb; all you need is a stereo rca cable, a good sound card, a rca to 1/8" adapter /splitter, and a good audio software program like Soundforge or Cool Edit Pro. I used to use the free Musicmatch editing software before they took the record from line in option away, so I switched to Soundforge. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help Frenchmansaxe. I've got a good sound card, but it looks like I'm going to need to get an audio program. Thanks for the recommendations. I've been a musician for twenty-five years, but someone else always handled the recording stuff. I just showed up and played, so I've got a lot to learn.

There's a freeware program called Audacity you can record with.
Also, if you have Nero CD burning software, it has an audio editor/recorder as part of the package.

If you record using 100MB zip discs, you can use a free program for the Boss BR8 recorder (same files on disc as the 840) to convert the tracks to Windows .wav files and avoid having to record the audio across thru a soundcard. That means having a zip drive on the computer of course. It won't work at all with the 250MB zip discs.

Jim Y - thanks for the reply. I'll check out the Audacity program. I have a couple of older computers that have 100 MB zip drives installed, but the 840EX has a 250 MB zip drive. Guess I'm out of luck there. Anyway, thanks again for the advice. I'll take all I can get.

You should be able to use 100MB zip discs in the 250MB drive, although I think Roland said you can't, I heard they do work. If you use 100MB discs, you also have the option of copying them complete to CD-r or whatever using a PC for archiving/backup. Less recording time of course, but in balance at least you can preserve their content, you cannot use the 250MB discs on a pc at all, even in a 250MB drive - Windows can't read them properly for some reason, but can read the 100MB from an 840 ok.
