ROG-type amp design question

I have a crappy old stereo speaker, in a nice-looking vintage wood cabinet. I'd like to construct a little amp for it, like ROG's ruby, but I've got a concern first: I'd like the amp to be VERY low wattage, and the grittier/old radio sounding the better (lots of middle, little bass, scratchy). The speaker is quite small, and can't handle much juice. I'd like to be able to really crank the amp to distort without blowing the speaker. If it gets a little pushed and crackly that's OK.

I guess I could breadboard some of ROG's amps and maybe Tim E's, but I thought if anyone has some ideas of making one of ROG's a little more old radio-ish, that would be the best.

The goal is for me to mic the cab for sporatic weird guitar sounds (and vocals) in recordings.
