Alright, im debating between a pair of rode nt3s or oktava 012s primaraly for drum kit overhead mics. which would be the better choice?

Hi PederJ!

I don't know the answer, but I'm very interested to find it out too. For piano recordings :)

NT3

I can't give a comparison but I do own a pair of NT3's and have been very happy with them, specially considering the price. Unfortunately I haven't used them to track drums so I can't give you a real good idea how they would work for that, I use mine mainly for acoustic/electric guitar and voice for now.

I have heard that they can be a bit harsh sounding in the upper frequency range, such as with cymbals, but I can't verify this. I've seen some postings from people that disagree and have used for this and they were happy with the results, especially when factoring in the price of the mics.

I have done some room ambience micing with them and didn't notice any harshness to the cycmbals but this is very different than using for overheads so your results will vary I'm sure.

From my experience with them I'd say the NT3 would be a GREAT budget condensor for piano, I really like the results I get from using them with my acoustic guitar.
My .02

You should do a search for both the mics, I know the NT3 has been hotly debated and you could get a lot more info on them from reading past posts.

I own 1 nt3 and 2 mc012s. I won't talk about which is better for overheads as I've never tried the nt3 (since I don't have 2) The mc012s do a good job as overheads. I can't say more since the only mics I've ever compared them to are 2 old battered ATs..

The only way I've compared them is on accoustic guitar, and even after that I can't recommend either 'cause I ended up using BOTH Oktavas (cardoid directed at 12th fret, omni directed at head) and that, I must say, sounded WAY superior than a SINGLE nt3 directed at 12th fret.

I'd try to find a store where you can't take both mics home and try them out thoroughly, then return the unwanted one(s)..

good luck

My band use the MC012 as overheads for our drummer, and we really like them. I have also used these as acoustic guitar recording mics.

I really love them and the different capsules make them quite dynamic.

Will be recording more with them this summer as my church prepares to put together some music. (hammered dulcimer as well as some additional acoustic instruments).

Just got a Nt 3 ist impression with my voice and my portastudio, Positive.I won't be parting with it anytime soon

can't compare the 2 - but I have a pair of NT3s that I use primarily as overheads. I've been very happy with them - think they sound great. I haven't seen any of the 'harshness' that stratamatic mentions - and I do use them for cymbals. The only thing that I've really noticed is that the mics put off a very 'hot' signal - I have to use the 'pad' on my preamp.

I've also used them to mic percussion and bass - and they've provided very good results with these, as well. They're built like a tank, too.

Yes, Hot indeed. I feel like I got somthing great for my money. There's a guy who sells them new on ebay. I got mine new in the sealed box for 135.00 including shipping, Seen them go for even less. You might want to check it out
