Rode NT3 . A different class

I have been going mic crazy this week but I must say that the Rode NT3 really does stand out from all of mics I have.
I use it for live vocal.
It suits my voice perfect and seems to have lots of depth.

I purchased it this afternoon and tried it out this evening and I am simply blown away.

Its a transformless FET design built with great components.

I was surprised how much little gain it needed from my slidders on my soundcraft mixer the sound was crystal clear at number 3.

The sound is defintly different then the Rode M3, I can now see why it is a bit more expensive then the M3.
I first got drawn to this mic when I saw some clips on youtube.

I love my NT3. Lately it's been my "go to" mic. It just seems to bring the best out of whatever I put it in front of. Good choice, my friend!

on youtube I saw this guy doing some acoustic covers . and it sounded amazing.

Ths last week I brought myself a SE Electronics H1 and although I love the SE electronics 2200A , the H1 handheld did'nt quite cut it for me . Its weird as the H1 is the most expensive, £150.

Then I brought the Rode M3 which i thought was better then the SE electronics H1 plus half the price but still did'nt quite have that edge.

The NT3 , man its a different class. For me it takes my vocals to another level, such a sweet sound.

I am glad I have met another fan.

I can't wait to have a proper try with my acoustic guitar.

oh yeah, I totally fell in love with this mic from the first time I plugged it in. My biggest application for it was right under my snare and about 2 inches out from the beater side of my bass drum. Was kind of lacking a bit of *umph* from the kit prior to that and the NT3 gave me what I was looking for.

I'm still relatively inexperienced as far as mics and what-not go. A hobbyist more than anything. I can't wait to be able to get into a little higher tier of mic.

How's the M3 treating you? I've been kinda curious of those as well. I've got a 4040 on my list as well. That may just be my next purchase. Been holding out to see if anyone sells any mics from the group buy after we get our orders. There were a few mics I wanted to get but didn't have the cash at the time. Can't wait for those pres though.
 
The Rode M3 is suprisingly good for the price . When close miked up the sound is full and warm though not in the Nt3 leauge but still a good one to have as a spare.

I have yetto try both of them properly on guitars.

Good mic, but is mine damaged?

I've done an experiment of the NT3, against a number of other mics. I agree with previous comments that it sounds quite good in most applications. It has a "bigger" sound than both the A.T. AE3000, and the Rode NT-1A. I felt the AE3000 was "cleaner". Which brings me to my question to other NT3 owners.
In most applications, I found this mic to be a little "overdriven" and a little distorted. Has anyone come across this effect, and a solution for it? I did not find this of any other mic I own under any application, but this mic had a tendency to it in most applications. I just bought this mic used on ebay, and considered that it may just be a faulty mic. Or is it possible that I just placed it too close to the source? That will be my next trial, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I didn't receive the manuel, so I'll have to do some investigating to track down some further info. Also, the red LED light does not come on when the mic is turned on. Again, could anyone confirm the proper functioning of the light? Does it come on with Phantom, or the battery, or both, or what...? :confused::confused:
 
The NT3 is one of the most offensively brittle sounding mics I've ever encountered:eek:

Can you expound on you description of "brittle"? I think I know what you mean, but...

Any NT3 I've heard has been at best exceptionally bright, if not outright harsh sounding, to the point of being unable to enjoy or listen to it for very long.

Thanks. What I heard when I first used it was a sound that I thought was from a good sounding mic improperly positioned, but I continued to find this wherever I put it. Some things I found close to sounding good, but a little (what I call) "overdriven". Although it may mean a hard to use $100 mic, it is nice to know I'm not just hearing things, or got a damaged mic. I'll find a good use for it eventually I bet.

Again, can anyone confirm the proper functioning of the LED light. Mine comes on for about a second when I turn it on , and then goes off, although the mic is still on. This seems strange, but is this normal/proper functioning? I just bought it on EBAY, and just want to make sure it functions as it should.

According to the NT3 manual which can be d/loaded here http://aus.rodemic.com/downloads/nt3/nt3_product_manual.pdf ............: the LED flashed to indicate good battery condition, if it stays on the battery is getting low on power.

This has been my experience as well. A friend bought a pair for his studio after reading some favorable reviews, and they sounded quite harsh and thin on overheads. We switched them out for SM81's and breathed a huge sigh of relief.
