What are your comments on the RODE NT2. Is it over-priced at $400 (what it goes for at most retailers).

I may end up selling mine and upgrading to the RODE NTK. Still debating.

Use it generally for vocals and acoustic guitar. The NT2 is not a switchable-pattern mic.

The NT2 has got a cardiod and an omni pattern.

I like it for the two things you just mentioned. It has a definite "sizzle" to it . . . a presence boost at around 12 khz that sounds really good on certain vocalists, and is awesome for accoustic guitars. Not the first one I'd reach for as a drum overhead, though.

DUH!
Has it been that long since I've used this mic? My error. The few times I used it, it wasn't in "omni" mode.

The NT2 is a great mic but its not for everyone. Youll find that it has a smaller, more tightly focused sound than studio projects mics for instance which are bigger and more open. What is special about it is its scoop and sizzle. Its pretty scooped as mics go. It can be amazing on some women, tenory men and some baritones (like my own) where it pulls out the tenory part of the voice and gives it a flattering presence. It is smaller and almost compressed sounding compared to some other mics in the range so if youre looking a big open vocal, check out the NTK or the C1,C3, or T3, or TLM-103.

I concur with Chessrock and JuSumPilgrim. I have one and I like it on my voice, also on acoustic guitar. I've used it on acoustic upright piano because at the time it was the only mic I had (SM58s don't count for that). For that, I could get a good sound if I really worked it, but that wasn't an ideal situation.

For male vocals, I tried the NT2 once on one of the singers in the band I'm in. He's got a raspy, airy sound and is definitely in tenor range. At first I didn't like what the mic did to the rasps ... but when I did a 1 dB cut at about ... 1.2K, I think ... it sounded smooth and quite good. After I got that artifact out, whatever it was, I was able to hear what the mic was doing to the rest of that voice signal, and I really liked it.
