Hi

Already have an Audio Technica AT 2020 condenser mic, but thinking of upgrading to a Rode NT1A mic - just wondering if I could have your advice as to if this will be a significant increase in the quality of the sound? Or are they very similar mics?

Thanks

Unless you have a good set of monitors I doubt that you'll hear much... if any... of an improvement.

Ah right - I have just ordered some studiophile AV40s! I'm on quite a low budget so I'm not spending loads and loads. Just wanted to know if it is worth getting the new mic, as I have a feeling my other one is buggered, lol.

It depends on what you're looking for in a mic. What do you plan on recording with it?

What are you using now? The 2 mics are both very good value for money, the 2020 is Sounds on sound magazines favourite cheap item. Both mics will give a good quality recording in a home studio and in fact I have both in my pro studio, they do sound different but that is where personal choice comes into it.

Cheers

I plan on recording mainly vocals, but possibly acoustic guitar sometimes!

I had an NT1-A, I thought it was pretty good on clear male vox, female vox. Addind a tube sound made it even better because it sounds a little thin. Loud male vox tend not to like it. (In case you Death Metal or something) I thought it was horrible on acoustic guitar. An MXLv67 or shure sm57 is much much better.
