RODE NT1

OK mixmkr: I was able to get your stuff with IE. How come I can get oodles of other mp3.com artists with NS?
Never mind if you don't care. :)
The samples you have there aren't the best to discern the superiority of the NT-1. All of the instruments sound like synth that has been EQ'ed to get the sound you're after. If that's the case, then you probably would find the additional bleed of the NT-1 a big pain in the ass for not much gain in quality. When you're trying to get a very pristine copy of a performance without shaping it at all after the fact- The Røde is amazing for the money.
And Eddie: It works on a boom. Even better with two of 'em on two booms!

As a web page writer I have problems with netscape as do other writers I know. - some writers ignore it and just assume the netscape users will go away - unfortunately the newer versions of netscape still have problems - I'd piss it off and go over to IE5 - it's free!! and supports all web sites. I had to write a separate version of my site just to satisfy the netscape users but I can't guarantee all links and pages will work. Unfortunately my counter informs me that 24% of hits I get are from netscape users.

Hey Eddie N...
Howdy there. I've been interested in video and audio for years. Over the years I have broken my dad's camcorder, his Sony 6 channel mixer and his old Sony stereo dynamic mic. Hehehe..good start, wouldn't you say? I guess you could say that I've got a little bit of everything in my brain - Audio, Video, Electronics, Painting, Cartooning, Sketching, Music... I feel quite privileged to have so many things which I am experienced in - especially since I never had training for anything. I read a lot of books. Digital audio doesn't interest me so much - just audio in general. I try to avoid digital multitracking possibilites due to its high cost, and as I am in the process of setting up a home studio, I have to economize as much as possible. I figure I can get a good 8 track setup for around $2,000. Just the basics so I can record my talented friends and make albums. It'll be fun.

I'm confused... I tried to make the bbs system store my name and password, but I still have to type it in every time. I do have cookies enabled, but to no avail. I also don't see the option to display my signature... this bss thing is acting kinda funky on me...

John S: I'm not a web page author. Don't even know much html. But how can you blame NS for my not being able to access that mp3.com page? Funny thing: I set up my own mp3.com site and I can access it with either browser.
And I'm not even a pro at this. I uploaded text/pictures/and my mp3s and they all worked as advertised. What "bugs" exactly are you talking about? Or are you just using proprietary features of Front Page that aren't supported by NS. It's just that sort of crap that makes me stick with NS. In the end you have to decide whether you want to support the MS attempt to monopolize the net or go with open standards.

Netscape is my favorite. MSIE is a nightmare. FrontPage is irritating. MS in general just stinks. I was really disappointed in Netscape 6, though. Of course, AOL released it - go figure. I hate them. But let's stick to the original topic, shall we?
Anyone out there use the DSP1000 by Behringer? I'd love to hear some samples.

Also, I think we should keep in mind that the price difference between an NT1 and the SM-57 is only $90. For only a $90 difference in price I'm not expecting to hear the sonic improvement I would expect if I were plugging into a $3,000 Neuman.

Am I likely to get a $90 improvement in sound switching from a 57 to an NT1? Probably, depending on the application.

If one imagines a ratio of "sonic performance to price", I'm seeing a great improvement in sound for my $90 by going from the 57 to the NT1. Am I going to see 31 times that sonic performance increase by going from a NT1 to a Neuman (a $2,800 price difference)? Probably not.

As such, the NT1 seems a genuine bargain.

well...the NT1 went back to American Music supply today along with the ART tube MP. I think that I may have been one of the lucky ones that received an "off" unit(s) because I actually, with more tinkering, was able to get more satisfying results capturing realistic sound sources using dynamic mics over the new NT1...and I know that isn't right. The ART tube MP LED was defective also. GASP....I am gonna try a 2001 Marshall and see what happens next. I must admit, these new genenration condensors are new to me, but not quality mics.

Drstrawl..sorry you thought the mp3 pieces where overly eq'ed etc and non representative of accurate mic techniques. Actually, there is very little synth in there, except for the obvious parts on keyboards...the rest is mic'd instruments...all guitars, basses, percussion, etc.. anyway...a good excuse to keep pluggin' away...thanks for your time in checking them out.

Actually, I have heard a LOT of things negative about the MXL2001. I was planning on buying one for my home studio, but I scratched it off my list after having many people tell me that it is no good. I'm gonna stick with the NT1. I don't care if some people get better results with an SM57, I'm gonna get me one and judge it for myself.

No need to apologize for your music mixmkr:
And I didn't say "overly" EQ'ed; just that each instrument I could discern seemed to have some sort of effect on it. I write music that's 100% synth and would love to be able to dial up a patch for many of the sounds you've obtained, but IMHO for capturing the "air" of a performance or the sparkle of an acoustic instrument a more sensitive mic is in order. I rarely use the NT-1s at my home studio due to poor noise isolation but almost exclusively when recording live performances ranging from acoustic blues to lounge jazz to power trio rock.

Doc... do they work good in the live situation? What do you use them on live?

hey coops , checking the sensitivity when we miked that acoustic , i couldnt imagine mixing that mic on a stage .... i could be so wrong but that was pretty sensitive wasnt it ??
Anyone know where i can get a rode nt1 shipped to western australia for around $500 AUS????
Cheers

Coop: it really depends on what you mean by "work". I've used it at some pretty fierce SPLs with my pre turned way down AND the 20dB pad engaged and it stayed clean. And I've used it on some fairly quiet acoustic gigs and it picked up every nuance of the performers sound field.
But: As was stated above- the off axis rejection, while noticeable isn't terribly large. In other words if the crowd is loud- they're gonna impinge on the recording heavily. But doing live recording, I've come to like this because it picks up the audience's emotional response to the performance following with the music.
And Spider: Since I'm not running the mic through the stage PA- feedback is not a concern. Nightmare if I tried it, I'm sure.

Doc... I guess what I was actually trying to find out is do you use them on a particular instrument - eg acosutic guitars... or as I know you you have two Rodents, use them to stereo mic the whole performance? If the latter, where do you position them with respect to the crowd and then band?

Right in front of the drums pointed toward the guitar and bass amps respectively. The PA speakers are in front of the mic position. but the stage monitors are pointed toward the backside of the Rodents. I've got some pictures I shot with a Canon F-1 at my last gig that shows where I put the Rodents. If there's some interest I'll post them.

Hey drstawl...got any more recordings? I like that one - the drunkenhearted man. Got any more? I'd like to hear 'em.

Isaiah

That was my first live attempt with the Rodents! I've learned alot since then, but when you get it right it doesn't sound too much better than what I lucked out on that night.

I've got dozens of CDs recorded live, but I wait until the artists I've recorded approve the web posting of their stuff.

Hey Coops

I did a recording with the nt1 and I thought that my tenor voice sounded like a bass voice , so I bought a CD that had been recorded in the same place with the same mic. guess what same problem. Overly muddy vocals. Of course, it might have been the room, but it was sound treated. I did not see any bass trap though
