Rode NT1-A vs AT4040?

While you're looking around, maybe check out these guys. http://www.recording-microphones.co.uk/condenser-microphones.shtml
I got the Golden Age R1 MK II from them and so far, it's my best ribbon.
They buy from Europe and elsewhere and are very easy to deal with.
You'd have to check out of course, how their prices compare to North American and Euro but I'd certainly deal with them again.

I have found a good website that as the AT4050 at a good price. I will check that site out anyways - Thanks. :)
 
the nt1-a does something weird to the midrange frequencies in vocals imho.

a phase problem or something like that. the 4040 doesn't. the 4040 is a better mic for that reason alone.

the 4040 has been used for lead vocals on many albums. the nt1-a has not afaik, at least not nearly as much.

both companies make nicer mics. the the 4040 is a very good mic as is. the nt1-a has that midrange issue I mentioned, I know I'm not the only one with that opinion, it's come up on other forums before.

anyway - if those are your options, 4040. 4050 is a much nicer lead vocal mic with somethign a little magical in the tone, but 4040 is clean, clear and has the LDC thing working for it just fine.

You will find great deals used right now on all sorts of 40 series mics...you might even beat the new price of an NT1 if you look on Ebay or Craigslist...I scored my AT4033 for $100 off Craigslist...and since I was there to test it there was no question about it being a good one or not.

I don't really like buying used items, I have always been like this - don't know why. I don't mind paying for new ones. :) Thanks for the advice.

You would be suprised how few hours the used stuff have seen...if someone has only used a $700 mic on one project and is selling it for $300...its a good thing.

Agreed. And then there's those that win mics at a competition, but don't record anything and sell them at used prices even though the only use was opening the box to make sure it wasn't empty and to take a picture for the ad.

The advantage of buying used is that if you don't like it, you sell it for what you paid for it. No harm, no foul. But then again it does depend on what you're buying used. Some things are a bit more perishible than others. Headphones, speakers, cables, ..... And if it's not a semi-popular item or a really great deal, you could tie up those funds for quite a while waiting on a buyer. But at least you're not out 1/2 MSRP if you bought new and didn't like it.
 
I've purchased a butt load of used microphone off the bay and only had to return one.;)

Damned if it wasn't a NT1-A :eek: but the guy sold it because he dropped it (more than twice I'd say) then he posted a factory picture,:spank:

Not saying Rodes are bad, he just misused it.:o
For I have a K2 and it's a great tube microphone....use it all the time. :cool:

I like it better when I get them from motivated sellers and sell for twice what I paid when it comes my turn to sell...you would be surprised what you can do in this economy.:D

There is the MXL V69 that I like, or the V6
I've also been hearing a lot about the Apex 460 but haven't used it.
