Hi guys,

I'm gonna be getting the Rode NT1-A, and I was just wondering what I should purchase along with it. I'll be using it for ONLY rap recordings and some singing, no instruments. I know all I need really is an interface with preamp, but can you guys recommend me a good one for between $150~$200? Anything under the better of course. :D I was really just thinking of getting an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB Audio/MIDI Interface which runs at about $190, what do you think about that?

Also, I know this is really a general question but what are your opinions on Garageband? Should I go along with that simple and clean or should I look into other DAW programs? If so, what kind?!?!

So many annoying questions, thanks a lot in advance though!!!

P.S. I don't know if I'm just bad at searching but I did try searching for a question like this!!! I really couldn't find any... If there's a thread like this, enlighten me if you wish :drunk:

Check that it has a windscreen and shockmount - if it does, then the windscreen will work as a sort of pop filter, and the shockmount works as a shockmount...

You'll probably need a pop filter of some sort (especially if you're rapping about bitches and pimps and other plosive characters... :laughings:)

You'll need phantom power for the mic... presumably this will come from the interface, on which subject I can't really help you...

Good luck!

Okay, you realize that the word "equipment" is already plural without adding any extra letters, right?

depending on context of course...

You say DAW

I say Reaper

Alright, sorry my English isn't perfect. Didn't know a college boy trying to enjoy music and getting some information from a music forum would require that much of a knowledge on English, although I'd like to assume I speak more proper than many people... But will keep that in mind.

Armistice, it does come with a pop filter and a shockmount as a package but it won't be used especially to "rap about bitches and pimps and other plosive characters," just like rock bands wouldn't rock on about sex/drugs/violence/rebellion... :laughings: I'll mostly use it to speak my mind about the world, politics, and hardships. Just letting you know. :)

On the real, thanks for the answers I really needed. Which wasn't answered, but thanks for your time and effort from deep down anyway...

Can anyone else help me with what interface to get or answer my question?

LOL

Calm down, I'm just messin with ya. Most of the time, proper grammar doesn't matter...

But I'll say that you're already doing 100000000000 times better than most people who come here. You're very clear with your wording which helps us help you.

Most people put "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" as their thread title and proceed to the "d@M D3t Sh!T iS h0Wt! w!@ts t3H bE$t m!C 4 D!m P4@t v0Kls????" then get all pissy when you tell them to read an article or primer to help them understand something.

I'm here to help ya, bud :)
An M-Box will work just fine for you and will give you access to pro tools.
I also really do recommend reaper, it's a great (and I mean GREAT) DAW.

Is that what I'm supposed to have been writing about all this time... damn! :(

See how you go with the windsock thingy for reducing the effects of words starting with b & p in particular - a bit of technique helps too... if you find it's a prob, then a proper pop filter might be of use. They're pretty cheap.

Depends on your style - a lot of rap is quite "aggressively" rapped, if you follow me - lots of emphasis, dynamism etc. - harder to control the plosives when you're really pushing air out in that way... On the other hand if you're more mellow in your delivery then it may not be a problem for you..

Your english is fine BTW... where are you from?:)

Ah Kingofpain, I didn't see your second post until now which made me trip like that haha. Thought you were just being an ass to me, but of course I don't want any problems on the first day joining. I was just gettin' mad attitude from other stuff too when I posted so I guess I did overreact, sorry! And thank you for the lovely information, will look into it. :D

And Armistice, thank you for the suggestion! I'm from a lot of places... Moved a lot, but always resided in California (Albany/Richmond/Oakland/San Jose/Los Angeles now :D)

Supercreep, I just heard a lot of positive reviews about this mic for the price, so decided to go with it... Do you have anything you wanna say about it though? I'd prefer to hear as much as possible about this before throwing down 2 bills for it. Let me know, thanks :)

I own the mic, and I think it sucks. It sucks real bad.

If you want to go cheap, grab an MXL V67G and call it a day. Or spend a little more and pick up a quality dynamic like an RE-20 or a SM7.

I'd rather use a C1000 or a C3000B than an NT1A - and that's saying a lot.

If you're hell-bent on owning an NT1A, I'll sell you mine cheap. I'll still be ripping you off, though.

YMMV

Anything specific about the NT1A? I don't own one but I sure am curious, given all the hype that mic gets... I mean jeez... you even italicized the sucks real bad part

Yes. It is shrill, harsh, thin, and cheap. We used it once, then put it in a drawer, where it sits to this very day.
