Roberts 720 R2R Tape Deck Need Help

I have an old Roberts 720 Reel to Reel Tape Recorder. I got it from a friend for nothing. It's only used as a practice amp for the time being (it sounds like an old Stooges record!) But when I bought some tapes I noticed that there was silence. When I say silence I mean silence, no crackling (which I do hear in short intervals when using it with my guitar), no hiss, no sound at all.

I'm not sure what the issue is, because I bought the owner's manual and followed the instructions as best I could and I still can't figure out what's wrong with it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like trouble. Make sure everything is connected properly and the heads are clean.
