ok I have a question about routing. I have a motu 8pre and I am pretty sure its 1/4 inputs are instrument, not line. would it be okay to go out of the rnp into the instrument in? and should I use balanced cables or not?
All eight inputs are mic/instrument/ or line... so yes it would be... and RNP supports balanced or unbalanced output... go balanced

ok I'm seriously considering the art. first of all, it's 200 bucks cheaper, and also I am not even looking for transparency. I like warm, and I hear it's possible to get a variety of sounds from the art. and plus, I have this bad feeling about getting solid state since what I want to be recording is more of a sound associated with tubes.

is there a difference in terms of warmth and coloration between the art and the fmr?

I will be using all types. my collection, including the ones I have already will be

oktava mk012 (pair)
AKG C3000B

sm57 (2)
sm7
AKG D112

Karma K6

I don't know how helpful it is to hear from people who have only one of these units, but I have the ART Ditigal MPA (like the MPA Gold, but with A/D), and the variable impedance feature is nice with dynamics - I've done some tracks with a SM7b with the impedance way up, and the sound was very good - full and smooth. I replaced the tubes - I think that's required, but I got nice results with some fairly common groove tube 12AX7s. Unlike some other widely proliferated ART units, this is *not* a starved plate design - it'll put 300 volts on the plates. Unlike the high end units, it doesn't use input transformers. It does use opamps (certainly not like high end units), but they're good Burr Brown ones. So I guess you can't say it's a fancy cheap tube preamp *or* a cheap fancy tube preamp, if that makes sense.

Ah... but I've never used the RNP, and I've heard great things.

just picked up the rnp from the store to try out. does anyone have some suggestions on what to try it on to compare its sound to the pres in my interface?

my rooms are very untreated and I have these mics right now:
akg c3000b
shure sm57
akg d112

and a guitar and a bass.

I tried guitar and bass. with guitar there is a huge difference, it is a lot clearer through the pre.

would the correct way to bypass the interface is turn the gain all the way down on it? I am using motu 8pre.

I will be doing more tests during the week. if anyone is interested I can make some mp3's maybe.

I took a look at the MOTU 8 Pre and all I can see is that the preamps let you choose a mic or an instrument level. I don't see any mention of line level. The RNP outputs a +4 line level, so that's what you want to have your interface set to.

I did a shootout session today with my RNP into the line ins of my Digi002 Rack vs. the preamps in my Mbox. I prefer the simplicity of the Mbox, but I wanted to see how much of a difference there is. Bottom line of the shootout - I am hanging onto the RNP. The RNP makes the biggest difference to me on dynamic mics, especially the SM57, which sounds great on my vocals. (Try talking or singing into your SM57 as a comparison point between the 2 preamps.) The SM7b sounds really smooth on my voice through the RNP as well. My Pbass plugged straight into the RNP sounds better than the Pbass plugged straight into the Mbox.

It is a subtle thing; there are no "Oh my God!" kind of moments, but the RNP does bring more depth to whatever is being put into it and there is more air and midrange punch to my ear. If I had to sell everything I own, I could be pretty satisfied with a pair of SM57s and the Mbox 1, but the RNP gives me another inch or two toward the goal line. After today, I will still use the Mbox to lay down scratch tracks, but I will be doing all of my keeper tracking through the RNP.

I'm most likely going to skip on a preamp for now. even though there is a difference, I would rather spend money on mics, new instruments, room treatment, etc. because the pres on the motu do the job alright, maybe I'll pick up an art mp in the meantime. I am however still going to do more tests with it in the next few weeks with all my mics plus ones I will be getting throughout the two weeks (pair of oktava mk012 and an sm7)

You are a smart boy for trusting your ears.
