Ok so im thinking about getting the RNC which seems like its all the rave these days...but im not sure if it will be worth it..basically for the RNC i would have to go through my delta 1010lt's d/a and a/d converters and pay 180 dollars for it...should i jsut use the timeworks which i already have?

You're assuming that all compression is the same. They all sound different on different sources and for different purposes. The compression you'd use on a two buss vs one you'd use on a vocal only vs one you'd want on bass vs one for clean electric guitar vs............ you get the idea.

Ok, a quickie from someone who uses both.. :)
The RNC is a (or the?) clean machine. Very versatile from extremely quick to smooth n' slow. Since I'm doing a lot more in the box' than hardware these days I can't even say how they exactly compare sound wise. They're both pretty flexible. But you're thinking of going through another layer of conversion too..
So as always, use what you have, maybe get the RNC if you want/need some nice hardware? :D

If your mixing ITB(inside the computer)...save your money for a UAD card. If your mixing OTB you may want to consider the RNC and even then I'd say save for a UAD.

What is the UAD card?

EDIT: so i checked out the the UAD and it does sound like what i should get however im having trouble thinking about buying more plug-ins...its lame, but i want some rack gear..i hate looking at my rack (which i made myelf and really sucks) with one piece in it.. I dont know Sonar 2 has some good plug-ins...i think this forum has led me to the fact that there are more important things that my studio needs then more effects....Im just longing for some hardware and i thought that maybe someone would tell me the RNC would be a huge step up, thus justifying the purchase of it.

I suppose i could just buy a rack of Behringer gear....i hear its catching up with the high end stuff pretty quick :p

The RNC won't help flesh out your rack much - it's only a third of a rack space.

if your rack is hard to look at and only has one unit, then sell that unit(if it's not a necessity), and then go for in-the-box plugins.

you're going to have a cleaner setup and get way more for your money.

Your preference, really. I personally love my RNC's but I didn't really use them much when I was mixing in the box. Since I switched back to analog mixing, I'm MUCH happier with the compression I'm getting. Still, I don't use it when I mix in the box- not worth the hassle when I'm the only person who notices the difference.

Take care,
Chris

i know this sounds stupid...but i dont know anything other than ITB....if i were to go analog...were would the tracks be stored after tracking?

Going fully analog? All tracks would be stored on a multitrack tape recorder.

If you were to still mix ITB, you could send the track to outboard gear (read: RNC), then track them back into your computer simultaneously.

thanks...as mention before thogh id begoing through my converters again and it doesnt seem worth it....I mean..okay..all you guys that have racks full of gear are not ITB guys..so during tracking i assume everything goes into a mixer but where do the mixers outputs get recorded to for mixing later...i know you guys or at least most of you dont use tape players do you?

what? Daw->Mixer->2bus of mixer back into recorder

Tracking can be mixer or pre-amps to tape deck (digi or analog) or converters, two, sixteen, twenty-four, whichever, at a time, to DAW. From there tracks could be sent back out to hardware boxes and back in to mix ITB, or all the tracks, or sub-mixes from the DAW could be sent out multi-channel D/A to be mixed analog.
Going D/A-A/D to hardware verb and effects is a good practical example of 'ITB with outboard' for us mid-range guys. :p :D You'd have to balance converter quality, +/- advantages going through all that. More typical might be if you have some nice hardware you'd use it on the way in or on an analog mix.

yeah thats what im thinking...on my budget the outboard gear defintly wont be good enough to bother going through the d/a and then a/d convo's

Everyone seems to be talking about mixing here. What about tracking?

I use my RNC for tracking vocals, drums, acoustic guitar, and bass guitar. It's awesome for those purposes. Sure, it's unbalanced... but you are going into a Delta 1010lt which only has unbalanced inputs anyway-- so who cares?!

I do all my mixing in the box, but I'd be lost without my RNC-- in fact, I want another one!

Plus you can get a rack tray for 2 RNCs or an RNC and RNP combo.
