Ringing Cymbals

I have a 20" crash and a 24" ride that seem to ring too much. How can I "muffle" them so that when I record you won't hear that one friggin' crash for 20 seconds after it's hit?

FYI: my mic scheme is one CAD KBM-412 Kick Mic, one Peavey PVM-22 mic for the snare, and two MXL V93M Condensers as my overheads.

I've heard of people putting electrical tape in X's on the bottom of the cymbal to keep them from ringing too much. I might be full of it, but it's an idea.

Sounds good to me. I don't see why that wouldn't work. Thanks, stonepiano.

<<so that when I record you won't hear that one friggin' crash for 20 seconds after it's hit?>>

maybe don't hit it so hard? or get thinner/smaller cymbals? :D

i see you've got rather large (and i would assume HEAVY) cymbals. in general, cymbals that are designed for live playing are generally poorly suited for studio recording. namely for the reason you've got a "problem" with. it's the smaller, "quicker" cymbals which are usually better suited to studio work.

you can give the tape trick a try, but yuck, i wouldn't want tape residue on my cymbals. i'd go buy a couple used 14 and 16in ones instead.

As mentioned cymbals better suited for recording would be your best bet but I would recommend Moon Gel over tape. Works alot better (a little goes a long way) and won't leave a residue. Good luck.

whoa! easy guys. I didn't mean to ruin any cymbals!

I suppose if budget is not a concern, I would go buy some hardware with shorter decays. I couldn't agree more.

I guess I just assumed everyone's kit was as crappy as mine.

Since I have no extra dough to buy new cymbals, tape it is!

you can always buy the moon gel packs then they wont ring at all ;). there about 7 bucks at your local ressurection drums, guitar center, and sam ash these moon gels also work on toms to muffle them. well that's all the info i can give u

For my 21 HH Raw bell dry ride I use a small rectange of TP attached with scotch tape. Works perfectly, and dosen't leave any residue. You just have to expriment to find the optimal size of the TP.

dont 20" crashes ring long cuz of there size, if u dont want u ride ring so much just tighten it more.
i use a paiste rude power ride and it rings like crazy but personaly i love the sound. but i use a 16 inch crash and there are no problems with tht
peace
