Malibu,

Four inches thick is great for straddling the corners, but two inches thick is adequate for first reflections and general mid/high frequency absorption on the side walls and ceiling.

Yes, it scales linearly, but you may be able to find it for less.

Oh!! Sorry, never mind. I thought you wanted to build the frame out of 2"x6"s.
Damn! no! That would be insane, but now I understand why you thought it was so heavy.

Well, I think that if you put up, say four 4-inch thick broadband traps (which is what four inches of fiberglass is, not just a bass trap) then you will have done enough. The exception is this...if you have a reasonably sized room with parellel walls then you might get slap echo between the parallel walls or between the floor in ceiling (because you place your bass absorbtion in the corners. If you get this slap echo you should place some absorbers in the middle of the walls, and these would not need to be four inches thick to be effective.

thanks for the advice. you say four 4-inch traps, one in each corner? would that be enough? my room is TERRIBLE, i would think i would want more than just four, like say, enough to fill the entire corners from floor to ceiling. and also in the tri corners. and i am definitely going to use some absorbers in the middle of the walls and on the ceilings. another question i had is, about diffusers on the rear wall behind the listening position, would this fiberglass be good for that also? from what ive researched it seems like i would want to get not just absorptive fiberglass but actually something that diffuses. suggestions? (i am on a tight budget)

You won't find 703 or the like in home improvement stores. You need commercial insulation suppliers. You will need to buy a whole bale (2 foot high stack). Definitly start by buying just one bale. The chances of your room needing more than one bale to tame it are low. Since the cost is pretty much linear I just buy one inch thickness and then experiment with stacking them up to make two, three, or four inch panels and where to place them. (Be sure to use gloves when handling the uncovered panels. Then when you have an arrangement of panels that seems to do the trick calculate how much fabric it will take to wrap them go make a trip to the fabric store (and the lumberyard if you want to do framed panels).

excellent, thank you both very much for the help. one quick question that wasnt answered before, any thoughts on some low budget diffusion options for the rear wall, behind the listening position?

Sorry if you already said this in the thread, but how many feet is it from the front to the back of the room? What's the room size overall? My understanding is that if the back wall is less than ten feet from the listening position, then it should be treated with absorption, not diffusion.

the distance from the front wall to the rear wall is 10'2. the distance from side wall to side wall is 9'9. floor to ceiling is 8'8.

Then the back wall will be substantially less than 10' from the listening position, which means the back wall should be treated with absorption, not diffusion.

very interesting, this is the first time i have heard that. is this a pretty standard and known rule?

well then, i will absorb on the rear wall. thanks for your help!

i will, although im having some trouble finding OC703 and 705. know of anywhere that sells it online?

I don't think anyone seels it on line. If so someones keeping it a big secret. There is a national chain that seels it. SPI-co.com. That's how I got mine.
