So a buddy of mine has a crap load of this stuff, its a about 3-4 foot long and all 2 inches thick.

We cant decide if we should make those tube trap type absorbers or just cut some of it in half, stack it to get 4 inches thick, place them side by side, then stuff them in panels?

Obviously if we did that they would be wavey looking, if you know what i mean?

Any ideas?

To clarify what i mean by cutting them in half is from top to bottom so you end up with 2 half round pieces that would be 2' thick.

Hope this makes sense.

That might work slick. Likely there won't be any acoustic data available for it :cool:.
But the density is there, plus you have built in a variable thickness and air gaps to work with.
What's the diameter? It could be set double (or more) layered a few different ways. 'C facing out 1st layer, 2nd layer facing back interlocked' / staggered..?

Yea, Ive googled the hell out of it and have found stuff about tube style traps but I would like to try interlock like you mentioned and build a covered frame etc. There's gonna be gaps but I wouldnt think it would be too big of a deal? It would have to offer some sort absorbstion no?

The diameter is 8-10" I think and again 2' thick.

Throw them out. Aren't you the guy saying room treatment isn't needed in just about every other thread? You obviously don't need them.

:D

Yeah at 8-10" dia plus the 2" thickness there's going to be a lot more air space the way I was picturing it- vs if it was like 4" inside diameter would be be a tighter pack.
But that doesn't preclude you slicing some of it to work out a to-fit packing.
Need someone to chime in on the up/down sides of having unfilled spaces and such.

Now that'sa funny :D

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to RAMI again.

Hmmm , I dont recall saying room treatments are not needed ever..I think i said Over the top studio grade treatments are a waste of money for the average HOME recording room/person or something like that, I dont remeber.

Hey did you see the Foo fighters won 5 grammy's for the alblum they recorded AND MIXED, In Grohls garage and house? I think they used gobos and moving blankets and some other basic room treatments. And the weird thing is the sound quality and mixing sound way better that what you have on your sight And Im guessing all of your stuff was tracked and mixed in a totally treated space! Of course they had much better gear im guessing.

Im helping a buddy with a space that has a chance to be a decent room,20x22 with a 12 foot ceiling all finished drywall. My basement will never be a good space to record in no matter what i do to it. And the best thing is i realize that fact and am ok with that fact. I feel sorry for all the people who come to this sight already overwhelmed with their basic interface, sm57 and laptop and wonder why their recordings are falling short of what the big boys put out. The fact is these people , including myself, are freakin light years from even having to take into consideration the room they are recording and mixing in. Thats not to say they shouldnt be educated about acoustics but first things first.

I checked your sight, I dont hear that big production sheen, I do hear alot of snare drum though, must be your treatments are lacking?

Dude, I was joking around with you. I even put a smiley at the end of my post. Didn't mean to get so much sand in your vagina. I posted in the "Toys R US" thread too, and I half-agreed with what you were saying. I didn't realize you were so "sensitive". :D

And for the record, I don't have a perfectly (or anywhere near) treated room. I believe in working with what you got, so stop talking out of your ass, your embarrassing yourself.

Now I won't be able to sleep because Drieb says my songs don't sound sound as good as the last FOO Fighters album. :laughings: I love it when people claim someone's music/production sucks because they're pissed off, in this case for no reason at all. As if I'd expect you to claim you like anything you heard.

Hehe...No, actually it proves that YOU should treat your room. :)

I laughed when i read your post actually, my vagina is sand free. I didnt say I didnt like your recordings I just said the snares are too loud, for real that was the first thing i thought when i listened to 5 or 6 selections.

If I came off as mad or a hater, im sorry. It really didnt feel like i was talking out my ass.

Anyhoo- Im gonna help this dude treat this empty space with nothing more than carpet, moving blankets, and this rigid pipe insulation made into some type of gobos/ difusers. Oh and furniture.

It's all good brother.

You might be right about the snare. Even though I play everything on my tunes, I'm a drummer first. The snare is NEVER too loud. :D :D

I'll send you some pos rep to make up for the neg rep I sent you when the system lets me. Now I wish I hadn't done that.

Yea its all good, there's nothing wrong with spirited exchange.
