Hi! Seems like a decent forum. WIth a lot of knowledgable people. I have a couple questions I'm hoping some of you may be willing to help me out with.
I'm sure some of you have seen and answered similar questions over and over again and if that's the case please point to an old thread or webpage where I can learn more.

1. I know a fair bit about computers. I know that there is a mic jack on most of the sound cards comming out these days but is this the jack that would be used to record through? Would I need to pick up a mixer and plug it into a serial interface? What are the different routes I can take to actually recording sound to a hardrive?

2. I've been playing guitar for some time and understand the basic premise of what needs to be done with respect to recording. I know I'll need some software to do this if I want to use my computer. What is a decent one out there for a begginer to get started with?

I don't intent on opening up a 5 star studio however I would like to make the best use of the computer I have and the software out there. I have a decent amp. What's the best way to capture it's sound?

Best REgards!

Probably the best way to start is for you to answer some of these questions, as well as read, read, read everything you can here.

1. How many tracks would you like to record at one time?

2. Do you have a CPU right now, and what are the specs? (processor and speed, amount of ram, age, primary use, etc.)

3. Do you have any mics, speakers (I saw you said amp,) etc. that might work? If you don't know quality wise, post model numbers.

This will be a good start.

Hi matey,

I just recently joined this bulletin board and started recording as well.

1) Use the Line-In on your sound card. Sounds much better than the mic jack.

2) Software - Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audition) is a good piece of software and very easy to use. I've been playing around with it for around 2 weeks now and love it.

I think if you really want to capture the sound of your amp, the best way is micing it up?!

Mind you... i'm only a newbie helping out another newbie! So i might be totally off the mark... :)

Use the line in.

Get a fairly good large diaphragm condenser mic and a preamp/phantom power supply.

I use Guitar Tracks Pro2 and Wavelab 4.0 for mastering. They are awesome software packages
