Hi there,
I'm taking a course to get a license as a tour guide in sunny Israel. Once a week we meet early in the morning and then pile on the bus to go explore some new region of the country.*

Right now I use my tascam dr1 to capture the talks at various sites and it does a decent job, but there are a few difficulties.

Typically my group will be standing out in the field, with light to moderate winds, and I can eke out a spot between 5-10 feet from the guide, who might be soft*spoken. getting a legible recording can be quite a challenge.

In a month or so I'll be picking up my tascam dr100. I'm putting*together options for recording tourguides outside in the field.*

So*here are my options:

A) use the internal cardioid or omni mics.
B) plug in a mic from my collection into one of the XLR inputs

The mics I have are:
akg c1000s
shure sm58
shure sm57
A cheap apex medium diaphragm compressor
and two cheap chinese matched stereo pencil compressors.

the downside to plan a is internal mic quality. The pro is battery usage
and it's easier to*manage the equipment along with my notebook and pen

the downside to b is finding a way to hold the mic, notebook and pen
at the same time (this is less of a concern without external mics
because I can hold the unit under my notebook)*

I have all kinds of*fantasies of rigging up some kind of wearable mic stand and wiring It*to the unit in my cargo pockets. Yes, I dream of being a cyborg.

I'm thinking right now that if I can rig up some kind of clever*shoulder or hip mounted mic stand, then the c1000s or the sm58 would be my*best shot. Any ideas?

could you convince your speaker to wear a headphone mike?

It's a great idea, except it's not so practical, because of the nature of the job. We spend all day cruising around to different sites, and a lot of that time is spent (for me at least) catching up to the guide and trying to get a good spot in front of him, 2 minutes into the next speech :) Also, there are lots of different guides, and not all of them would be comfortable with a solution like that.

Thanks for the post, though

Then a wireless lav is the way to go.
If you don't have a mic on a boom, which I think would be a little cumbersome but that's how the big boys do it.

()
