Anyone using ribbon mics on guitar amps?

I'd like some reccomendations my budget is about $500 give or take.

I did a search and there wasn't a lot of info easily accessed.

beyerdynamic, can't go wrong. One of those and a fender twin or vox ac30 baby!

What's your room like? If it's a bedroom then the directional Beyer stuff makes a lot of sense. I have a fairly open space to record amps in and really prefer figure 8 mics. I grab the sE Electronics R1 ribbon before my AEA R84 on guitar cabs, it has a better suited frequency response and "bite" that just works real well in that app. Also, the figure 8 mics have different response characteristics on each side of the mic, giving you 2 distinct sounds to choose from when mic'ing up a source.

The R1 can be had for around the same as the Beyer stuff.

If you want a step up, Crowley and Tripp has a "lower end" mic that I think is about $700 - still cheaper than Royer et al, and in the brief audition I had with it I was impressed.

I actually have a small iso booth :) It's a broom closet but it works. I could use the control room and monitor with headphones, which is a bedroom.

Ribbon mics sounds normally warm and natural which can fit very well to
guitar amps. I recon that the fig8 pattern of the ribbon mics will do nicely on open back guitar cabinets.
However, the ribbon mics must be kept away from airflows, or the membran burst easily. Always use windshield close to an guitar amp.
The mics normally handles SPL up to 160-165dB at 1000Hz or higher.
The max SPL decreases heavilly when frequency falls.
In Europe you can buy budget ribbon mics with very nice sound at the price level from US$265 and above.
The brands like GA, HANSEN etc...

I tried a Volvo windshield on my royers, but it was a little too big.

Maybe a beetle will fit?
