Hey all. I use a tascam 488mkII and had read the inputs have somewhere around 65db of available gain. I've been thinking about buying a Fathead or other ribbon, will the stock preamps in the 488 be sufficient or would I need to get an external pre? Has anyone tried a ribbon mic straight into a 488? 65db seems like enough-ish but I'm wondering if it'll be way too noisy. Thanks for any input!-Wally

I'm pretty sure that 65 db of gain will cut it for the ribbon mics. As long as you're not recording crickets in the distance I would imagine it working. If you're recording electric guitar or something loud, that will definitely be more than enough. 65db of gain is generally a pretty generous amount of gain I would say. I think it would work for vocals and quieter stuff too.:)
