Don't stare at the eye.
I said I'd be sampling something a bit rougher, so here it is--some straight rock, nasty funk, and gratuitous wanking, a la 70's & 80's. FWIW, this too was tracked at quieter than bedroom levels. It's 1:24 am here, and I just finished it. In fact, in the guitar tracks, you can hear my furnace. (With a cheap ribbon--not a condenser!) While my goal isn't to record this quietly, I'm thrilled to be getting some cool tones at this low level. It makes recording at all hours that much more possible.

Yes--I know the solo is over the top to the point of not fitting :D. This one was more about the gritty rhythm sound, but I wanted a lead to contrast against the mellow one on the jazz piece I posted before.

All electric guitars are with the ribbon mics. Drums are pre-recorded loops, and the bass is DI (though with some modeling this time). No EQ to anything--just compression on the bass.

Thanks for playing along!

(Next up: the ribbon mic does death metal!)

Oh yeah...the lead solo was done with the mid-side combo using two ribbon mics, but the rhythms are one mic, double tracked. Nothing beats double tracking for a big sound...

Sounds great again. You've obviously learned how to milk some great sounds out of your amps, and the ribbons sound excellent to me here on my crummy laptop speakers.

Thanks zero!

Yeah, I feel like I'm getting it dialed in. Now all I gotta do is write a song or two...and be world famous!!!

(I think there's an awful lot missing where I put those three little dots!)

Lol. Wankalicious! I'm not really a fan of that Vai/Satriani mega-delay lead tone, but you captured it well. The rhythms sound better. Very 70's cock-rock. :D

Yeah, I definitely prefer the rhythm sound I got there. I'm stoked to actually track a whole cock-rock in-your-face song with the sounds I've got dialed in (before I bump something and lose it all).

That rhythm sound has me in the mood to finish a ballsy AC/DC type tune I've had bouncing around in my head...

Yeah that would be kick ass. Do it!

What a great guitar sound, Bob.....
How do you place the mic in front of the cab at that volume?
I'd love to hear some in-your-face thumping metal tunes with that sound...;)
