I am really liking it...the more I learn about it.

I debated on what i was going to go with for a long time...considered doing the N Track thing...

but, I just decided Nuendo was really easy to work with for me. I really want to learn how to do soft synth type stuff with it.

I think you have the makings of a really good track for sure. You really have a good voice, and it fits great with this kind of song. Maybe try some fader moves on the vocal where it gets quieter. And maybe try panning both the backing vocals to one side (since it's an oldie, seems you could mix in that way where stuff is panned not so evenly), or maybe double the backings so you've got both parts on both sides. I'd probably double the acoustic, too, and pan them out. I think that would fill it out a lot. Other than that, I would think it's just a matter of tweaking levels. Just some ideas.

Nuendo, I was thinking about switching to Nuendo (or Cubase SX, now). Sounds good to me.

Another surprising song choice! You'll really freak me out when your next one sounds like the Chile Peppers or the Hives or something.

Wes, very good suggestions above, I can add nothing there. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed listening to your interpretation of a great song. Really dig your singing, and the little touches you added (like the bells).

I have to admit I have always loved this song and I am supprised. I really like your version, you were very faithful to the original which is the same way I do most of my covers. I really like your singing you have a nice voice. The only thing that is bothering me in the mix is the bass. It is a bit boomy but that could be my cheap computer speakers. Most recordings from the 50's and early 60's sound so good because with their overdubs they lost some quality each time they did it. They refer to it as generation tightening because the song lost some quality from first generation to the second and so on...things sat better in the overall mix because of it...A GREAT EFFORT!!!

They refer to it as generation tightening because the song lost some quality from first generation to the second and so on...things sat better in the overall mix because of it...

mmmm...you might wanna check the history books on the advent of multitrack recording. And I think the term you mentioned might more often be referred to as "generation LOSS"...as I think you were correct in the concept. Things sitting better in a mix because of added tape hiss....I'd have to pass on that one ..... Your idea was there, I'm just a smuck to try and clarify it for you


Wes...in addition to Crawdad's excellent reverb suggestions, you might also consider rolling of the high end (and the low end) of the reverb return(s) too....much like emulating the reverbs in the days of yore.

I'm going to give some of your mixing ideas a run for sure. i did pan the vocal harmonies a bit, but it didn't quite turn out how I thought it would. Have to play with it more. Curious though why are you thinking about going to Nuendo? I assume your Paris stuff will work well with other software...unless you have that hardware mixing board? BTW - I don't think I will be sounding like the Hives anytime soon...you could give it a try though!

MKG - Hey thanks a lot for listening. I appreciate you guys saying you like my voice...listening to this now though I am hating it again. I think to me it doesn't seem to have enough depth in the low end...I'm going to blame it on not having a large diaphragm mic until I get one

B. Sabbath - cool, glad you liked it. I definately wanted it to sound like a throwback to the late 50s or whatever. Unfortunately...I wish I were as talented as many of the guys here...and could make it sound modern if i wanted to Everything I do has that vintagey sound kinda....I guess becuase my arrangements are so sparse for one thing. Plus the "show band" vocal style...gotta try to roughen those up a tad in the near future.

Elvis - It's not your speakers...the bass is my weakest link at this point. I love this song too, it was fun to do. Still not sure of where exactly i want to go with a lot of my stuff...so, I am just "cutting my teeth" mixing/recording wise on some covers. this stuff is all still foreign to me...thanks for listening.

I will check that out mixmkr - I was using the "Grungelizer" in Nuendo.

As far as the reverb rolloffs...wow, thats a really cool idea. When I posted this - I was just expecting...some mixing advice. But, it's turned into a lot of cool advice on how to get a better sounding "vintage" recording...which, for whatever it's worth...I dig thanks mix.

No, no...I meant what I said. Now I was not saying "multitrack recording" I was talking about overdubbing since most of what they were recording was done mono. Les Paul started it back in the mid 1950's and I also stand by the term "generation tightening" because I have seen it referred too many times. Recordings by Les as early as 1955 have him accompanying himself and Buddy Holly worked with it as well in 1957. They basically recorded the track and played it back with added accompanyment. Sure there was hiss but man a lot of that stuff sounds sweet.

If your'e going for a authentic vintage sound, I think mixing in mono would be a great idea. If you're going for a modern sound, maybe put a loop on it ! This song kinda reminds me of a song that was out not long ago by Cracker, I think. Sort of a modern Ricky Nelson 50's type song, but with a drumloop. Worked for them!

I'm thinking of switching cuz Paris is falling behind, and Cubase SX seems to have a lot of great features. But I'm just thinking about it (the grass seems so f***ing green over there!). Paris hardware may work with other software soon, cuz the guy who runs the Paris board and some other guys are working on ASIO drivers and XP drivers and new FX and things. Pretty cool. Kind of saving Paris from a complete death.

hmmm....yeah I dunno man...I wouldn't ditch it so fast unless you are going to get hardware that is equal to it at least. I've just heard that most of the popular soundcard solutions arn't up to it's quality.

You just need to sell a few records...get a big protools setup. heh.

As far as loops - I want to get into learning about that stuff...but, havn't I just use the computer as a nicer 4 track

As far as Cubase SX - from what I've heard from some people, it still has a little ways to go in terms of interface/useability. Like, the mixing functions of it right now, are pretty bad. BUT - by christmas or so it should be nice. Depending on what Nuendo does (2.0 hasn't even been announced yet..really)...I may be going that way eventually too. As I have the need for more MIDI/Soft Synth features and such.

Don't talk about the grass being greener....you're the one who has the great end result...paris is calling my name! heh.
