have just spent 4 hours working on a tune, saving regularly. When I finished I exported the track to a .WAV file, then the sequencer unexpectedly quit.

The .WAV file was blank, when I tried to reload the project file I got the message 'not a valid cakewalk file'.

I find this somewhat frustrating, as the file is there and contains all the information, but some tiny part of it is corrupt. Is there anyway to retrieve it (like in a hex editor).

The project was all done with MIDI, and didn't contain any audio, and I've tried opening it in safe mode to no avail.

Any ideas?

If the project is all MIDI and there is no audio there can be no .WAV file.
.WAV is a file that is audio only.In order to save to .WAV you must record whatever combination of midi instruments you have onto a track in Cakewalk, then save to .WAV.

sorry, the .wav file was the mix down, the project was composed of aboout eight DXi's

What format did you store that in? cwp??? Anyway if you want to recover the audio waves in a risky manner, look under C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data\... you will find a bunch of wave files in there, you gotto be patient to figure out which one is the one you want. Try randomly and see which wav is from your latest project and other waves should be near that.

Sorry guys, he said he was using DXi's. DXi's WILL export directly to wave files. I do it all the time. It is not necessary to "record" the midi when routing the midi track to a DXi.

Anyway, his problem (aside from the blank wave file) seems to be he can't reopen the Sonar project.

What version of Sonar are you using Beerman? If it is 1.3 or earlier, you need to upgrade to the 1.3.1 patch. There was a problem with the versions prior to 1.3 that caused this problem to happen quite frequently.

If you are using a later version, I would send a note to Cakewalk support.

I was using 2.0, but downloaded the upgrade to 2.2 shortly after the incident.

I'll email Cakewalk

Thanks for the posts

I've had this happen to me and I emailed the file to Cakewalk where they found nothing wrong with it. Every time it has happenned, I had an instance of a certain audio plug-in effect in the project.

The way I solve the problem, I take the .cwp file to my other computer with Sonar loaded on it, change one thing and return it to my DAW. I was working with Windows 2000 also when this happenned. So I don't know for sure if it was the plug-in or the OS or a combination, but if you have another system around and can load Sonar on it, do what I did. Otherwise send it to Cakewalk.
