Reverb on mesa trouble - tube???

Hey guys. I have a Mesa rectoverb head. When I switch the reverb on, it distorts badly - even on the clean channel. I turn off the reverb via the footswitch and it works fine. Would this be a tube? How would I know which one? Any other ideas?

It has a spring reverb, I don't think it would be a tube problem if it sounds good otherwise. I'm no expert on spring verbs. Maybe check the connections to it. Make sure nothing is shorting out.

Yes, it could very well be a tube. To determine which one you'll need to see the schematic and the chassis layout, or maybe you could get hold of someone at Mesa who can tell you. On a Fender amp, the tank (spring unit) is driven by both halves of a 12AT7 in parallel and the signal is retreived from the tank by half of a 7025, the other half of which sums the output of the two input channels and feeds the power section (http://www.kbapps.com/audio/schematics/tubeamps/fender/deluxereverbab868.html). Mesas are very similar amps; from what you say, I would suspect the 12AT7, the 7025 or the tank transducers. Maybe the coupling cap on the input of the 12AT7.
