Hi all. I've been HomeRecin' for a few months now and I'm at a point where I think I need to upgrade my SM 57 and 58 betas to something with more presence and warmth. Having very little technical understanding of microphones (though a fast learner), I'm hoping for some advice from Homerecers.
I hope this isn't annoying, but I have several songs posted at www.nowhereradio.com/sluice/singles (stream available). I'm not looking for song or mixing advice- I get PLENTY of that in the MP3 clinic.
I just need advice on mics appropriate for my particular vox and guitars.
If you do take the time, my most recent projects there are "Rhythms" "Dry" and "Run For Your Life."
Again, I'm only interested in mic advice. These Shure's aren't cutting it for me anymore.

Thank you very much! :D

Tom

PS. In case you can't listen, my vocal and guitars lately have been compared to Peter Gabriel, Dave Mathews, The Police, and even Tool.

Hey Tom,

Seems there are a lot of this type of question in the mic forum -- but yours is a bit different "what mic will fit your voice best", and you give examples.

Harvey and littledog and some others may be able to do that by ear :D but they will still all be suggestions.

Is there a GC near you? They have a 30-day policy IINM (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I'm under the impression they allow people to return mics up to 30 days later.

With that in mind, I'd like to be the first to suggest a mic:

AT4047... it sounds wonderful on my voice. Now, you and I don't really have the same voice (I've heard your stuff :D), but it's one you might try. Also, read some of the other threads. People seem to enjoy the Studio Projects C1, MXL v77, and several others. This is assuming you're going for a LD condenser mic, correct?

Just a jumping off point for ya ;) (hope this thread doesn't make the top of your roof a "jumping off point" :D:D:D)

Good luck in your search

Chad

PS: (The reason I don't know GC's policy is I've never returned anything -- I hoarde it all! :()

Wow, Participant. You come to my aid here too. I think I love you.

There was a GC near me in New Jersey, but I'm back in Maine now. However, I was once pretty tight with the local music shops, I just don't spend much time in them anymore. I mean how many fucking times can a man hear Stairway to Heaven on an imitation Les Paul before he runs out the door with his tail between his legs? But, I'm sure they'd be willing to let me try some stuff out if they knew I was up to something ;)

I'm just starting this search, so I'll begin with your suggestions. I'm sure you know a lot more than me...

Thanks once again my friend.

Tom

Sluice,

Having listened to a couple of your tracks over in the clinic, I for one can't wait for you to get a nice vocal condensor.

Not that the vocal sound that you're getting now is bad, but I think it will open up something fierce with the right mic!

Oh, and allow me to add the MXL V67 to the above list. I got one on the recommendation of several posters here (Harvey comes to mind:)) and I think it does some nice things for my voice, which tends toward the deep and nasal side. It sounds like your's might too, although it's hard to tell on mp3.

Anyway, good luck and nice work!

I've been compared to Tool, but it was nothing to do with music.

hey SLuiCe,

as you know, I know nothing about microphones, but from what I understand, there are a lot of great recordings done with 57's or 58's.. Most recent thing that comes to mind is a 'Terry Date' interview I was reading.. He says when he recorded Phil, (Pantera) they used a 58 on vocals and a 57 for the guitar.. I maybe completely wrong here, and I may get flamed, but I wonder if it's really your mics that's the problem, and not something your doing..

If I were you, I would p.m. one of the pro's here and ask him to privately rheem you out.. I have done it.. I don't want to say who I did it to because they might get pissed, but read around and find out who the 'Big Guns' are, and p.m. them.. I was glad I did, and I received some great advice..

Sometimes a personal ripping can be a better learning experience than when it happens in public.. It didn't make me feel Blue though.. I was able to Bear it..

Even some non pro's.. don't Slack .... I'm sure you can master this problem with the sound if the right ears hear it, and you may not have to buy anything..

P.M. specific people.. No one has said no yet, and you get the personal touch..(i.e. bitch slap)

dig?:)

This was my first post in the mic forum.. I'm outta here! :D
