Hi, I'm trying to customize a 5080 patch (CeremonialTimp) for use as a live-theatre sound effect; I'm hoping someone can either help here or point me to some resources (other than the manual) to get me going again.

The sound I'm going for: hitting a timp and tightening the head so the sound slides up. From a keyboard perspective, I'd started with just doing it manually: with the pitch bender down, hit the key and return PB back to normal.

The trouble is, I need to play the S/FX multiple times in quick succession and the sound is still decaying as I return the pitch bender back down for the next attack (so instead of a clean ramp up to pitch, I'm getting it oscillating up (good) and back down (not good).

I've turned off all reverb and chorus, but the sound still rings. I wonder if it's tied to an underlying tone in the patch. I don't know the patch editing engine well (which may be obvious from the question) so this may be trivial or impossible.

What I think I'd like to end up with is a patch that does the slide automatically, polyphonically.

I'm going to bank-search for some other patch that might already do this and see if I can figure out the model, but if anyone has some helpful pointers, I'd be pleased to read them.

Thanks for your time...

As far as the sound still ringing, you need to shorten the decay that ahppens after you release the note. That can be instantaneous if you want it, so no problem making the note cut off quicker. Of course, it will sound less natural.

That timp slide thing is a common effect, and it seems that very few sample libraries or synths have the sound. It is indeed a tough one to find. What you are doing with pitch bend is probably the best/quickest way to get the sound going.

Although I haven't done this myself, I would suggest looking into setting the patch to trigger the pitch bend on key release. This *may* be possible, adn would be darned convenient if it is. Worth checking into in any case.

Thanks

Thanks for the great idea ... I hadn't thought about that, and will give it a try!

Success!

Just a follow up to say I was able to get the sound I was hoping for, starting with SonicAlbert's idea. For what it's worth, and this approach is specific to the Roland 5080 line, I started with the CeremonialTimp and added a pitch envelope to each of the three tones. The envelope remains flat until key release and then raises the pitch; I think I ended up with a time of 30 and a value of 40 for all three.

Thanks again for the help!
