I have a SM57 with no sound. I assume the element is blown.
Does anyone recomend trying to fix it, I got it for free and hoped to fix it and have another 57 for whatever. I've looked a little online to try to find a price and availability but it's kind of hard to find the parts. I'm pretty handy fixing things, can solder, so no problems fixing it, if it's worth fixing. Any suggestions?

last time i checked, buying a new element from shure was almost the cost of the mic, so chances are it's not very fixable.

if i were you, i would sell it on ebay for just a couple dollars. lots of people buy them to replace the elements in or hapen chance that it's less of a problem than a broken element, and put the sales money twords a new one, or a used one on ebay.

open it check to see if the wires fell of. it happend to me a few time all you need to do is solder it up.

Good advice.

If the mic actually is dead, Shure will fix it for $50 plus shipping. You will basically have a brand-new 57 for about $60.

It's up to you if that is worth it or not. :)

Hey, this is a timley thread - a 57 just died on me. Good info.

Shure is reputed to have excellent customer service, especially for repairs. Please post your experiences when you get it fixed.

Same here. One of the wires disconneted and just needed to be re-soldered. Easy fix.

In case anyone doesn't already know, here's my update.
thanks for the input from everyone. I did email shure about the problem, they said a replacement element would cost me 84.00 for me to fix it myself, but I could send it in for repair for 55.00 plus my shipping costs to them. Not bad, getting a working 57 for under 60.00. As mentioned, shure does seem to have great costumer support and resonalble repair prices. Probably about even cost compared to ebay, without the hassle of bidding, paying, feedback, etc. with ebay.

Cool. :)

$55- the price has gone up, but still a good deal.
