Is there a software package capable of removing vocals from a recording (CD) and leaving only the instruments? Or one that will extract certain parts of a song in order to shorten/ extend that track? All of this on a home PC?

No vocal remover. This wouldn't work with stereo music for a variety of reasons. Did you know that you need the copyright holders permission before even recording you own version of a song even if you won't be releasing it? Interesting eh? :)

By "track" do you mean, a certain instrument in the mix, or "extract" a part of the song as in the whole mix? If the later, any .wav editing software will do that.

sonusman, I find that hard to believe...especially if no one hears the recording. Do all musicians and/or the publishing companies have ESP and can tell when you record their songs? heh...I better release all my cover recordings before the FBI shows up at my door....

FBI!!!

you are under arrest!!!

put your knees on the floor
and your hands where I can see them!!!

we have a long time following you El Barto!!!

 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

*jumps out a glass window and runs*

Ahh . . . Phase!

I dont know what software you are using but it should have the ability to flop things out of pahse. If you only switch the phase on one track, left or right, anything panned to the center disapears. You will more than likely lose the lead vocal and kick drum.
good luck.

If a recording was played (of someone else's music that you recorded)in the forest, and there isn't anybody there to hear it, does it make a copyright violation......
