I have been playing for allmost 20 years and I still don"t know what that thing is called..LOL
It's called an archaic throwback to the days before the picture box and horseless carriage. Christ man...you've been playing for 20 years? How old when you started...50? By 1984, the internal muffler was removed from the drawing boards of all but the cheapest drummakers.

I love my internal muffler on my snare! It let's me choose between serious steel shell ping sound which is cool in some songs or I can engage the muffler and get a more woody sound with no ring or just a little, depending on my mood.

Plus using the muffler allows me to emphasize the snares more or less. Oh yeah I use a remo clear pinstripe as my snare batter, and evans clear glass on the bottom.

This coming from someone using a Pinstripe on snare.

oh yes I remember now you don't have a point to make

My point?
Both internal mufflers and Pinstripes on snare...are for banjo-pickin', Budweiser-drinkin', Velveeta-eatin', wife-beatin', Skynard-lovin', NASCAR-watchin', basement-gigin', web-toed rubes.
