We have a Yamaha Custom Birch Absolute kit at the studio I work at that needed new heads. We normally use a 13" DW snare with it. Yesterday I went out and bought some heads for the kit based mainly on the salesman's suggestions because my knowledge of drums is still lacking. We got a Remo Ambassador coated for the 13" DW snare, Remo Powerstroke 3's for the Kick, Remo Emperor coated for the 14" Yamaha Custom Birch snare, and Remo Emperor Smooth White's for the toms. For the bottom heads on the toms we got aquarian clear's.

Everything seems OK except I'm not really familiar with the Emperor smooth whites .. they look flimsy and plsticky in relation to the more popular Ambassador's.

What do you all think of the Emperor Smooth Whites? I got them mainly because their was a good deal on a pack of them: 10", 12", 14", and then a 14" Emperor Coated all for $33.

they are probably going to be more resonant, with a little less attack and a longer decay than ambassadors... they will also wear quicker being thinner. i just realied you have a "fusion" kit... i think the emporers being a bit brighter and "notey" will work well on a kit with smaller dimensions

Are they a new kind of Emperor head?

Coz the emperors on my toms are 2-ply

The Emperor Smooth Whites are 2 ply heads that are supposed to be a hybrid between clear and coated. They have more attack than coated, but not as much as clear. They have more tone than clear, but not as much as coated. They will be stronger, and have a lower pitch than ambassadors due to the 2plys. Essentially, they're emperors in the way you would tune them and what drummers you would use them with. Given that they're a blend of the two types of heads, they should do well in the studio.

I have just started using the smooth coated heads.
I find that what tsl92802 has said is exactly right.
As an added bonus they are very durable for those hard hitters like my son who will knock the coating off my evans g2 coated heads in less than a few sessions, or will dent my clear heads within moments. His Premier kit (fusion sizes) sounds great with the smooth coated. A little bit bright for my taste, but records well.

Thanks for the info!

I had a friend who is an incredible drummer come by to put the heads on and tune them. They sounded great after he tuned them!

I agree that they are a bit bright and at first seem to have too much tone, but they recorded very well today!
