I'm hoping this hasn't already been a thread--I looked around but didn't find anything.

I'm wondering if it's possible to create a connection between a registered phone jack, (like what's on the end of a connection of a new-ish phone or modem), and a 1/4" TRS or XLR for recording. I found what appears to be a mic used by busdrivers or subway operators at the goodwill, and it has a registerd phone jack at the end. Thought it would be a cool flavor on a vocal if I could get it to work.

I opened up the cable that connects the mic to the jack and it has 6 multi-colored wires in it. Some of them have to carry audio, right? Total newb at electricity and connections so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Where there's a will, theres a way. I would do a google search on this if you haven't already. I dont think that it would use all 6 wires for audio. But, maybe. Good luck, with this. And please, post your findings.

Most likely you will find that some of the wires are for the switch and possibly controlling the connection to whatever device it's connected to.

I would Google the model number of the microphone and "pinout".

The above gives at least two diagrams for a mic to RJ11 which I am sure is the connector. Rather than butcher the cable, buy an RJ45 outlet. This will allow you to plug in the connector and pick off wires from the module. The RJ45 is 8pins so you loose the outer two (pins 1 and 8 on the RJ45).

The mic could be a dynamic or an electret capacitor in which case it will need pre amp power, usually no more than 3 volts but you need to make double damn sure of the polarity.

Pity you are so far away, I have shedloads of outlet modules!

Dave.

Just use a regular microphone and EQ it to taste ...

Heh! In the "good old days" there was a rather complex, passive "telephone" effect box as standard use designed by the BBC. I shall have a Google and see if I can find a schemo!

Thanks for the responses! The output module solution seems pretty strong--unfortunately I didn't see this soon enough and was feeling intrepid. In the RJ11 pinout diagrams, everything pointed to Red-Ring (which makes sense) and using the green wire as the tip. No shielding inside the cable though, so I soldered it to an unbalanced 1/4" cable (noob attack!). Signal definitely went through the thing--all hum though. When I depress the switch on the side, the noise increases, but talking into the thing doesn't work. May be that the mic itself is broken, and that's why I found it for $3 at goodwill.

Pretty noob-tastic all around, but if I do it again I'm definitely taking your suggestion and not trying to wire it myself.
