Hi i have a question, it's probably a silly one. anyway i was wondering if i have an analog mixer with say 8-preamps. and a 2 track reel to reel tape recorder. is it possible to connect the mixer to tape recorder and use the 8 channels on the mixer and record it on the tape recorder. i know it's not possible to get them on separate tracks but would i be able to record 8 tracks live and they would just blend together to a stereo track. this meaning i would have to to all the mixing before i record?

hope someone understands a can give me an answer.

Yes to all questions. That's how it was done back in the old days (more or less). Just do your planning before hand and then do live to 2 track, mono or stereo. :)

Yes it will work fine. There was alot of music recorded that way in the past.

Yes...just use the stereo outputs of the mixer to feed the deck and you can feed all 8 channels into that stereo mix.

That is a typical "live to 2-track" recording setup...still employed by some and often done only with a stereo pair of mics. You might set up a stereo pair, for the main body of the recording,m and then just add some spot mics to help things along.

You want to make sure that the mix you hear live is pretty much what you want to go to the 2-track...and then just use the individual channels of the mixers to better blend/control your individual sources.

Thanks

Thanks for the answers and the quick reply:)
