Reel to Reel please help

Hi,

I just bought a new mixer and now im looking for a reel to reel recorder. I have a very strict budget hopefully $100 or less. Im not worried about not having extremely good quality. I want 6+ tracks on the reel to reel. So my question. Do you know of any reel to reels that I can get for my budget or close priced to my budget. If so where can I get them?

try pawn shops or e-bay, i dont think you will get a 8 track machine for your money, but with a bit of luck you should be able to get a teac simul-sync 4 track machine.
 
For $100 or less, you're going to have a hard time finding ANYTHING worth a shit. You might get lucky. As said, check pawn shops and keep an eye on Ebay.
 
ok thanks, about how much do you think used 8 tracks would go for though?
 
i bought my tascam tsr-8 on ebay for $350 US (with remote), which is the lowest I think i've seen. generally, there around 450 - 500. but, if you look around, you may find a deal. a friend of mine just got a tascam 38, with a bunch of tape, for 250 from a local radio station that no longer uses it.

one thing to consider, if your on a budget, is that a reel of 1/2" tape (30 minutes) is about 35 - 50 bucks! no more just letting it roll like a cassette...:(

Yeah- but a two track mixdown recording on a 1/2" machine has some headroom that'll make your studio roof the sky!! Yeehaaaah
 
Im thinking now of going to an ADAT instead or reel to reel. I don't have the budget to spend 35-50 dollars for a new tape.

axis - man, i hope i didn't scare you off. the tapes are expensive but, to me anyway, worth every penny. i couldn't believe the sound quality of my 1/2" 8 track when i first got it. very big.

what i've started doing is using my computer for rough ideas, or my old tascam 414 for basic stuff, and when i have the song pretty well fleshed out, then fire up the reel to reel.

you can also get used 1 pass tape for half the price.

...but, yes, it is expensive compared to digital ...
 
I'll say the 1/2" 8 track is still a great format, despite tape being a bit expensive

It's worth it. The 1/2" 8 track, like the TSR8 and 38, are serious production machines. The cheapest I've gotten a 38 for was $350, and $350 is a fantastic price on a TSR8.

Really, you won't find much in the way of R/R for $100, except for the occasional sleeper deal on a 22-2 or 22-4, once in a great while. Also, $100 puts you in the range of the 244 Portastudio, or PortaOne, roughly, and not much more. Anyway, a 244 is a great machine to start multitracking on, if you get one in decent shape, they're a good machine to have. /DA
 
i saw a fostex 80 1/4 inch 15ips 8 track on ebay-today not a bad price.....as the same unit in Oz is going for $400.
may be worth a look...
