Steenamaroo

...
Hi all,
Another 2 minute recording from Steenamaroo here.

Sometimes I do a little recording just to see how a song would sound live.
This is one such recording, although I did add a harmony.

Obviously not looking for mix criticism or anything like that; It's a one mic recording with one overdub.
Just sharing.

Lovely performance.
Having had the good fortune to see Bob two nights running in 78 I have an abiding affection for his music and his call for justice.
On a recording level there's a fair a bit of hiss.

IF you trim the silence from the beginning the noise isn't aparent - my brain focused on it because it was there & obvious - plus I'm a droob.

The noise becomes less apparent because the fans slow down not long into the song, but to be honest, I'm not that bothered.

I really like the song, and I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, but I think I'd rather do a 'proper' recording than try to fix this one. This was a live trial run, if you like.

Funny enough, I learned it for a party that took place tonight. As it happens, it wasn't a receptive crowd.
I probably would have got stabbed for playing anything but oasis!!!!

Ah well, I'm sure we've all been there. :p

Lad rock certainly was a while ago - I mean I like the 1st 2 Oasis albums but there're better things to hear at a gig.
I look forward to a proper recording then!

You did a good job with this one Steen. This may be the most covered tune by any reggae artist I know of, so it's kind of tough in that regard to pull it of, but you offer an alternate take with more of a polite, folky vibe to it. Your vocals are really well performed as always.

Your voice is really smooth with great clarity. Do you have a naturally deep voice? I ask because at first I was thrown by the first few notes seeming considerably lower than what one expects with Bob, but it settled in as the song went on and I realized that you're not trying to mimic anything (although you did include a lot of the same little inflections and things). I myself have an extremely deep voice and am always struggling between singing comfortably, but an octave lower than I'd like, or really straining to hit the notes I should. Just curious. Thanks for sharing.

Hey heatmiser.
Thanks for the comments dude.

I found it almost impossible to sing this with neutral accent or inflection.
I mean, if you sing it 100% straight you sound like a British parody, and if you go balls out and do a Marley impersonation, well, that's worse. :p

Good catch on the pitch though. I do have a pretty deep voice naturally, although it doesn't stop me reaching pretty high if I really have to.
I'm certainly more comfortable in the lower ranges, and coupled with RAMI syndrome (hate singing loud when people might be near by), I chose to drop this a fifth.

I'm sure you can hear in the recording I'm straddling the line between singing and whispering at parts, so down a fifth was somewhere I could do that comfortably.

I think If I did a proper recording of it I'd meet Bob somewhere it between. Maybe only drop it a tone or two and give it a bit more welly? Whaddya think?

Low singing's something I've been aware of lately. I didn't realise I was tailoring my covers so that I could borderline mumble my way through, but then I re discovered last years cover of fantastic voyage by Bowie (it's at the top of my soundcloud).
I kinda surprised myself listening back! :shocked smiley:

If I remember right, everyone was out that day. ;)
