Recording...

guitars i usually record with my marshall head then to my pedal or some times pedal straight to the line in.. bass i use the xlr outputs on my bass amp SWR silverado special.. vocals i usually use my marshall head Clean for "singing" and the overdrive for more "harsher" vocals.. overall the recordings come out good, what i question is drums... should i use a four track.. mic the snare, kick drums, toms and symbols.. then use the playback to mix it and output it to the line in of my computer and then mix the guitars,bass,vox.... all over it? or is there a way to record drums with out buying any more hardware.. any ideas would be appreciated.. if not anymore hardware cheap hardware or ideas.. thanx
 
What soundcard do you have?
If you only have 1 stereo input on the sound card, then your mentioned method would pry be the best. Or if you have access to a mixer .... get a good mix of the mics and go straight from the mixer to the soundcard.
The only drawback is that you are then stuck with the whole drum mix as one track. You could output each track individually from the four track, thus giving you separate tracks for each drum mic, but getting the tracks to synch up would be a task to say the least.

-EDIT- Unless you have a few bars of click track recorded to each track at the beginning .... that would allow easier lining of the tracks in whatever sequencing program you use.
 
hmm...

see where i lye is i got more time than money right now.. i have no access to a mixer.. not that i know of anyways.. but as far as the four track mix with levels on the four track.. depending on the four track eh?? yes i only have one stero input.. ive thought about different ways to do it too but i wonder if the quality of drums will be "demo" quailty? if you have any samples before i waste some money please help.. thanx
 
Best bet would be to use what you have and do experiments, trying to achieve a sound you are pleased with. Try different mic placements.
Check out this thread . If all else fails .... then you may need to look into upgrading your equipment.
 
Your using your Marshall head for singing? Heh, interesting..
 
yeah dont come out to bad but then again im no vocalist goto www.purevolume.com/DeMent and check out death grip my buddy did the drums and bass i did guitars and vocals thats what i used but like i said im no vocalist
 
I just got done listening to your songs, the best advice I can give is to check your eq levels, that seems to be the biggest problem!!! Take some time on this it will be very rewarding. When recording from a pedal you need to check the settings on the pedal, once going though the tube it completely changes the sound that is comming from the pedal. So it might sound good comming from the amp but like ass comming from the pedal....and you are recording the pedal...right? Also when you finish the track are you mixing down and mastering the track?
 
no they are not mastered that was mostly fucking around but im not to familar with mastering as of yet what ive done is recording and trying to get it as clear as possible and then i have to learn mastering.. any tips would be apprecitated..
