I play piano and wanted to purchase a keyboard because I figured that it

would be easier to record with. I would like to use a computer to record with

as well. I understand that with MIDI only notes are recorded and not

sounds. Right? So can I record my keyboard with the sounds that are on

the keyboard? If so then how is this done?

Thanks in advance.

 uhmmm... Yes.... with the keyboard.

i have a keyboard to record with but i never use the sounds that are on it. this is because when i was learning i discovered that i was getting much better sounds from software packages (i.e. reason). also there are software versions (soft-synths) of most good keyboards that you can purchase and hook up to your recording software. for example i use cubase sx2 as my sequencer, and have the reason software package wired to it to generate my sounds, i select an a synth in reason, load a patch (e.g. grand piano) and press a key on my midi keyboard and there it is. also i have some soft synths that are also connected to cubase which i can also use. therefore if i was in your shoes i would probably get a cheap midi keyboard off ebay or your local music shop and invest any money that you might save on software.

If your a piano player, like me, i cant really play keyboards as well as pianos because theyre not weighted. If i was you, i would look more into getting a keyboard with weighted keys rather than on-board sounds.

If you can play the keyboard just as well, and youve already got a keyboard, you can still use the onboard sounds. you will need to set it up in the software you use, and its different depending on which software you use. So... Which software do you use? :)

In case you're totally confused..... The midi file is just a digital copy of what you physically did to the keys...what notes were played when and how hard...etc. Since there is actually no sound associated with this data it needs a source of sounds to trigger in the same method you did with your keys. Usually this is your keyboard itself....if you want to record the actual audio you will have to run your audio outs of your synth into your recorder and simultaneously record the audio as you playback your midi file. Now depending on your software...you can tell your midi track to use and internal sound source located on your computer (soft synths) instead of your physical keyboard.
