hi, I'm thinking of recording people singing karaoke, I use cubase essential 5, the thing is cubase does not support kar files, is there a way or a software that I can record people singing while they're reading the lyrics on a screen? I read something about cakewalk any cakewalk users who'd done it?

I do this alot...people that do Karaoke have checkbooks too.
I just run with 4 inputs and they can read the words while the CD-G is going at the same time...and Ill use a MS micing method to make up for some poor mic technique.

Adding a little reverb and using a aureal exciter makes them sound terrific...and they have friends who do karaoke too...you will make some money.

Karaoke Recording

I have a couple ways of recording karaoke and original music. My gear includes the X-Fi Elite Pro, Microphone (Radio Shack 33-3018), Guitar Rig 2, Cakewalk Sonar and Karafun Karaoke software. The most expensive of the bunch is the Guitar Rig 2 and Cakewalk software. Karafun is free and can be used soley without the other software.

Why Guitar Rig? Because it has the best sound for vocals that I have heard. Here is a link to one of my tracks so you can hear for yourself.

For original songs its Cakewalk Sonar with Guitar Rig for both vocals and guitar work. Here is a link to one of my songs.

As a home musician I love the setup I have because it takes up little space as I am living in a camper now.

If your even poorer than me then I suggest using karafun because it has great functions and some reverb that is not too bad.

I usually can find Karaoke versions of most songs online free...but clients mostly will come in with thier own music.
I have a Karaoke system I used to use in the bars several years back...I ought to get my own mall space...lol.

thanks for the replies, by the way darrin, about making money, can you give me an idea of how much to charge for song recording or studio time?

$15 per song...if they can do it in 3 takes...it usually gets me $150 for a few hours...and it can be amusing too...but you allways want them to come back and tell thier friends so allways be supportive.

Afterwards you charge them for $3 a copy...this is the sweetest plum.

Recording using karaoke tracks

FubarSam,

Thanks for your post. I heard your songs and they do sound really good!

Can you explain in detail how you use your various equipment and software to get the recording done? Are you playing the karaoke track on the computer and recording into it at the same time? Which one of the software do you use for effects etc?

I have a reasonably high end Vocopro karaoke system. My songs sound good on the speakers but when I record them simultaneously, it does not sound good at all. I use Zoom H2 for the actual recording of the output from my karaoke system. I use Goldwave for cleaning up the recorded audio.

Thanks in advance!

You can lift the wave files right off the GD+G if you have them...Ive also just went and stole the audio off of online karaoke videos...there is one for allmost any song you can think of.

I have a few Pioneer rigs I have people run for me in pubs arround the area...but you dont get a wonderful sound using them in the chain...and Id never run mics through them to record a client...I have much better stuff for thier voice.
