I'm designing a setup for home recording but will require audio and sequenced recording. I would like to combine the use of a computer for both sequencing and samping but i don't know if i can link the computer with my hard disk recorder. I own a Korg D16 and my main query is: when you press record on the D16, will it automatically start the sequencer at the same time (through midi)? Will it also work for a drum machine?

You will need to check your D16 manual unless anybody here knows if it will send Midi Machine Control data.

Most pro DAW programs like Logic, Cubase or Sonar have this functionality. They will do midi, audio and slave to MIDI time code.

I don't know about the Korg..

I use a Roland VS880 and Cakewalk. Syncing is not a problem. Set Cakewalk to MTC (MIDI Time Code) Set the VS to generate MTC.. press play on Cakewalk, it waits for sync, press play on the VS and both will play.

I would hope the (newer than my Roland) Korg unit includes something as basic as sync. I've been syncing machines together since the 80s I can't imagine a new device that didn't.

Re.: Cakwalk/VS880

That was always a problem I had with Cakewalk: having to press play on the PC and then press play on my VS880. Whereas when I used the VS880 with Cubase, I could start the whole thing just by pressing Play on the VS880. I could also FF, RW, Stop, and use the jog wheel to change position in the song. This could not be done on Cakwalk.

Cakewalk may have fixed this problem with Sonar. However, I prefer Cubase and will stick with it even though I own both Cubase and Cakewalk.

It is almost all but guaranteed that you can sync your Korg with your sequencer (although I have not investigated it).
