Recording vocals: Vocal mic>>preamp>>interface, etc.

I don't need to mic a a microphone amp./pa system do I? The mic goes straight into the preamp and I track on headphones right?... what if I didn't want to use headphones?

neeeeeewb alert!

vox > interface > pc is all you need.

For monitoring, either

pc > interface > headphones

or

pc > interface > speakers

So if you don't want to use headphones, you need to monitor through speakers. This, of course, means that your mike will also pick up what's going through the speakers. It can be done, but it can be messy.

So you don't need a PA (unless that's all you have to monitor with).

what about recording guitars? Do you have to mic the guitar amp or is there another way around it? ...seems like micing the amp can get messy.

Guitars?

You can go:

guitar > amp > mike > interface > pc

or

guitar > interface > pc

Both will work.

Guitar through an amp often sounds better.

Guitar straight into interface is okay if you need to keep volume down and you can process guitar sound afterwards

gecko, I was told that guitar through amp CAN sound better but is very hard to do it without everything getting messy...this is an important subject because I'd rather not have to buy a guitar amp now so I can put the money to something more important in the recording chain like monitors and room treatment. Does micing a guitar amp really have the potential to give me that much better of a sound than just running the guitar through the interface? Is the difference that noticeable in terms of sound quality?

Also, I know you're supposed to crank the amp volume all the way up if micing an amp.....why is that out of curiosity?

Given your situation, ti sounds to me like you are better off looking at monitors and room treatment rather than amp.

Cranking the amp up? Not necessarily. I think that advice stems from the idea that there is a 'sweet spot' when the amp is working at a particular level, where the sound is nicest.

So . . maybe get a lower wattage amp and turn it up.

Or get a pedal or two:

guitar > pedal > interface > pc
