how could I connect my shure sm57 to my v amp2 to add distortion and other effects to my vocals? Could I connect my mic to the vamp2 via an instrument mic? I know the mic is lowZ and isn't the line in on the v amp a high Z input. Could I do this. I know there will be some loss in quality, which I don't mind seeing how i'm recording black metal vocals.

Impedance matching transformer

You can get it at most music stores or even Radio Shack. Should set you back about $25 or so. Just tell them you want to plug a low Z mic into a high Z input. It's a little barrel shaped gizmo that basically just is a low Z mic input (like on a mixer) on one end with a male 1/4" plug (like on a guitar cable) on the other end. It's really more than that, as it has a transformer inside that changes from low Z to high Z. You can then use your mic on a guitar amp, your V-amp, a high Z PA head, whatever. I've done this exact thing many times, as have a gazillion others. I put mine into a fuzz pedal ( that's old guy talk for a distortion pedal) for the voice in Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man'.

Good luck and have fun!

oh I know about those. It's just I don't wanna buy one unless I really have to.

I don't care really if it worsens the quality for vocals anyways. I wanna get a really distored raspy sound anyways. But maybe i'll get the transformer thing. I just don't have much money.

Hmmmm

Do you have a mixer or standalone mic pre of some kind?

The Radio Shack transformer is only about $12 as I recall.

You COULD just make a modified mic cable too. Pin 1 to Sleeve, and Pin 2 or 3 to Tip. Easy enough.

Well, you could do that but

then you've ruined a mic cable, so you could've just bought the transformer. I was just guesstimating the price from what I recall, which, I'm the first to admit, ain't much. Also, then you gotta screw around with making the cable, which just isn't worth it to me, and I figured he really just wanted a plug and play solution, but maybe not. Anyway, if you use a mixer, you could just take an effects send from the mixer to the V-amp, then back to the effects return, and that way you can dial in as much or as little as you want. What's your setup? Don't worry, I'm sure it beats what I've got. I'm just tryin' to help.

BTW, FV, I used to have to ride around to gigs in the back of an old Econoline panel van with a manual trans and bad shocks. I hate you. ;)

Ford Van, Making that cable wouldnt help you any.
The transformer brings the mic up to a line leval signal so that the V-Amp with recieve a guitar like signal.
So making that cable skips the important part, the transformer!!!!!!
You wouldnt believe the ignorant conversations people have with you when you try to explain that to a customer in a music store.

Buy the Shack transformer and dont mess with the cable mod because it dont work.

thanks a lot. I'll just buy a cheap ass transformer. I don't have a mixer, only in my software. My set up is: Vamp2, firebox, Cubase LE with a good DAW.

Duh!

You're right, I guess I hadn't taken that into account. When I used a mic into pedals, it was already a hi-z mic.

Good luck and have fun.
