Recording vocals (basic question)

Hi all,

I learn from numerous sources that to record good vocals, you'll need a compressor so as to limit the dynamic range of your source. Questions:

1) Is this true and recommended?

2) Can someone recommend an affordable but good quality compressor in the market? How much should I in general be expected to spend on one?

3) Do compressors work with all types of signals? Or do they specialize (like work only for microphones, etc...)?

If careful with mic technique you can get away with recording the vocal without compression, but unless you are a pro, youll need some to help it sit...if you are doing the PC recording thing, its ok to use plugins after the fact......

If you can swing $175 US, the RNC is a really nice compressor.....

it will work with any source that you can put into it.....

I'm getting by with no compressor during recording, sometimes using plugins after the fact.
