Recording via DI

Please exuse my ignorance here but I got a little confused today. I plugged my bass directly into my Mackie 32.8 line-in just to kind of fart around with some drums that I recorded. As I was playing the bass I was looking at my Joe Meek Compressor that had my direct box sitting on top of it. I use the direct box sometimes for going straight to the board but would it be okay to to go to the DI-to the Joe Meek- then to the board via XLR? How about just straight into the Meek and then into the board via XLR. Does going in with XLR enhance the sound? Why is this confusing me all of the sudden? :confused:

Please Help!!
 
I don't think using the D.I. will do anything. You should probably just plug straight into the joemeek. and i also dont THINK using the XLR into the board will enhance the sound. If i'm correct thats just for if your cable is over 20 feet (to get rid of background noise?) I hope i'm right and i hope i'm of any help

Adolescent is right on.

Use the Meek or the DI for different tones. No need to use both unless you need to send the signal a longer distance.
 
Which piece of Joemeek equipment are we exactly talking about? Is it just a compressor (like the C2) without a pre-amp? If so you would need a DI to bring your bass signal to line level before you can plug it in your Joemeek.
 
Thanks for the help. It was SBFS (sudden brain fart syndrome)! The peice I'm using is the VCQ1. That's the 2 space one...right? It's at my studio and my SBFS is not letting me access my memory banks clearly right now.
