Hi,
Kind of new to this, need help please.
I recorded 9 tracks from Drums, to Guitar, to Bass etc. using my casio keyboard. When I play it after recording and saving it, it's great, but when I disconnect the keyboard and then try playing it again all the instruments are piano. The drums, bass percussion everything is piano. How do I get all the instruments to remain?

MIDI does not transmit sound; it's just a string of letters/digits that describes the notes you played (play note C1, stop note C1, play note E2, stop note E2, etc, etc.)

Here's a basic primer: http://www.tweakheadz.com/how_to_get_started_with_midi.html

What you have to do is render the midi tracks down into audio tracks.

One way is to hook the audio outs of the keyboard to the audio line-ins of your soundcard then play the MIDI while recording the audio.

Or you can use a MIDI VSTi that replaces the sounds (for example, soundfonts, SampleTank, Kontakt, GigaStudio, etc.) and then THAT audio stream in your computer can be saved as an audio mixdown.

If you want to get into MIDI, I >>highly<< reccomend that you go to the bookstore or Amazon.com and get a good basic midi book.... you'll definitely need some reference material to study.

I would say that nowadays this is the prefered route, because the project will be easier to handle and easier to export (as mentioned).

The only thing to be aware of that if you want to be able to play softsynths in realtime, you need a soundcard with low latency drivers.

If your keyboard is multitimbral you should be able to playback different instruments simultaneously using a GM (general midi)soundset.

As you record each track you must set it to a different channel and assign a instrument from the GM list.

You could try downloading a midi file from the net and opening it up in cakewalk. Then assign your keboard as the output. This may give you a little insight on how it works.

If you Casio isn't GM set it up multi and do a sysex dump into sonar. Then put the sysex first in the sequence. It should load the settings into your keyboard for you (for that song) everytime.
