Recording to VS1680 from XP80

I want to play a midi file on my XP80 and record the audio outs from the XP80 to my VS1680.

How do I sync them so that when I hit play on the XP80 it will start the recording process on the VS1680 ?

I've read both manuals and have made the midi connection as I understood the manuals by making the XP80 master and the VS as slave ( midi OUT from XP to midi IN of VS ) however I can't make it work. What step am I missing ?

Should I setup the VS in record mode first and then hit play on the XP ?

Not sure if this will help,but here's what I do: I have a VS-880EX and a Roland MC-50MkII sequencer.I record a sync track on the VS via MIDI (this is NOT an audio track btw) and then I set the squencer for MIDI clock.I plug the outputs of the keyboard/sound modules into the VS (they are obviously going to play back the data on the sequencer),put the VS in record mode for the tracks I want all this to go to,hit Play on the VS which starts sending the prerecorded syns track to the sequencer which in turn feeds the synths their MIDI data which then gets recorded onto the VS.Whew! But it works...
