Someone reccomended this to me.

How does this actually work? What's the actual functionality. Would you all reccomend this?

It doesn't have to be external, but is should be a hard drive that isn't the C drive. You do that to releive the stress on the C drive. That drive is constantly reading info to keep the program running. If you ask it to also record audio at the same time, you will be giving it quite a workout.

Ok Cool,

That helps out a bit, I just want to make sure I keep tarack of my files, like takes and things, so I can delete what I don't need at the end of the session, what's the best way to do that? I can remember in the past where I had stuff all over the place.

First, it's always good to create a new folder for each new song/project. File management can get to be a bear when you start doing multitrack.

Second, track sheets can be a big help. You can make your own easily. When I'm tracking a client, I notate all tracks recorded and later delete the non-keeper tracks.

yeah, sorting out your files will be the same (if you are using windows). it will just be a different letter at the start of your folder directories. Insted of C; it will be H: or something.

Cool,

You guys have been very helpful. I'm learning from you all everyday.

Thanks.

Sometimes you sequncer will help you. If you have each song in a different folder, there might be a utility in your software that gets rid of all the files that you are not using in that session.

if you only have one drive now.........

most systems will allow you to put another hard drive into your system box. don't go external until you have to. you can usually daisy chain it onto your ide or sata controller. some places will do it for you if you buy the harddrive there.

firewire external is touted as being as fast as ide or sata, but is usually not when tested (www.tomshardware.com)
