I'm going to record my band's originals on my computer and have more than adequate software and hardware. Mics aren't the greatest (57's, 58's, EV) but usable. How do I capture my killer tone? Mic placement, angle, isolation cab???? It's hard rock and I have to say the recording tone/ambience I'm looking for could resemble late 80's Scorpions recordings. Thanks for any help!

Most of your killer tone will come from you, your guitar, and your amp. You have to be satified with your sound before it gets to the mic. After that, experiment with mic placement and doubling tracks, adding delay, and so forth.

Hi
Since youve got Dynamic mics stick the 57
as close as you can ...if youve got a open back Marshall or the like, mic the back with the
Electro voice,,just remember that if you want that killer tone your not gona get it with a 57 youll need a Condensor....way more accurate

Angle dead on ...borrow a POD if you can

How do you get that "million dollar guitar sound?"
From a $300 POD... that's how!

Try putting the sm57 about an inch or 2 from the middle part of the speaker cone, about 3 inches from the centre of a 12" speaker.
Then used the EV unit about 4 to 10 ft away from the cabinet. This will give ambience to the guitar sound. Mix them together to best suit.

Thanks for the replies. I have tried many mic combinations and placements and I'm getting close to what I want but there's always a raspy sound around 3k that's driving me nuts. I borrowed a couple condenser mics (SM-81 BG-4.0) but have yet to try them. My guitar rig is Digitech 2101 (I know), Boogie 2/90, 4x12 ported Marshall cab with EVM 12L speakers. Is it feasable to run an 31 band EQ in the mic line? I prefer a live cab sound but someone give me some info on this POD thing, a website?

Forget the website... go to your local music store and check one out.... I guarantee you'll buy one.
You'll never have another question about micing an amp ever again. :)

Hi!

This whole post is just MY OPINION. Your mileage may vary!

First of all, check out the guitar tone here:
http://www.mp3.com/Badwolf

on songs like "Richard" and "Armed And Dangerous".

now go here:
http://www.mp3.com/HotterThanKarl

and listen to "Self-Destruct For Me"

I can tell you how I got those tones, because I was recording engineer (and guitarist) on those recordings.

First of all, the SM57 is my preferred mic for guitars, so you're fine there. Here are my tips

1) Use a decent guitar. For a "Scorps" sound, you'll need something with quality humbuckers (like the better Gibson stuff). Make sure intonation and fret dress, etc are up to snuff. I'd stay away from high-gain pickups like the EMG's if possible, but you can work around them if necessary.

2) Use a decent amp. Ideally, you'd start with something all-tube (ideally a Marshall 2203, 2204, 1959, 1987; but you can make it work with a Fender Super Reverb, Deluxe Reverb or Champ, Vox AC-15 or AC-30, or any similar well-constructed all-tube amp). For higher-gain 80's stuff you'll probably need to add a GOOD overdrive pedal like the Ibanez TS9 tube screamer.

Starting with a warm, ballsey amp is 99.9% of the battle. Start with a high-gain, solid-state buzz machine and the battle is already lost. Even a $125 Fender Champ from the 70's will sound incredible with a Tube Screamer pushing it, and running into a 4x12 cabinet. Which brings me to...

3) Use a decent, closed-back cabinet, preferrably a 4x12 by Marshall or one of the better Ampegs, but even a 1x12 or 2x12 can work well if it's a decent cabinet. Find something with some warm speakers. I like the Celestion Vintage 30's, but I also have an Acoustic 4x12 with old Eminance speakers that sounds incredible, so you don't have to spend a ton of money. Just use your ears.

4) Another REALLY important point. Get some good, sealing headphones, crank up your amp, put the mix into your headphones and start moving the mic around. You can change the tone DRAMATICALLY with mic placement. I usually start with the mic right up to the grill of the cabinet and about halfway between the center and edge of the speaker. But move it around. Moving the mic toward the center of the speaker will usually give you a brighter sound. Toward the edge, a darker, deeper sound. Moving the mic farther away can give you some intersting colorations, as can moving it off axis.

Bottom line... use your ears and let them be your guide. You've probably got time, so put it to use and experiment.

Good luck, and feel free to email me with any questions!

Oh, I almost forgot one of my favorite tips.

If you're tight enough, do your rhythm tracks twice (onto two different tracks), then hard-pan them left and right. The sound you get is HUGE. Check out the Badwolf stuff I mentioned in my previous post, or the Extreme album "Pornograffiti" for dramatic examples.

Thanks!

That Badwolf stuff sounded like early Survivor. :)
Good stuff, but the guitar could have been brought up a bit... the drums overpowered all that good tone.
I listened to every song from both of your bands. All of them were really good, but "Where You Belong" was a total smoker.
What happened to that "Alanis" inspired tune? The sound quality seemed to have dropped off a bit on that one.

>That Badwolf stuff sounded like early Survivor.

Well, I've never heard Survivor (besides "Eye Of The Tiger"), but I guess it's all 80's guitar rock stuff. It was fun at the time, but I've gone in a different direction since then. ;-)

>Good stuff, but the guitar could have been brought up a bit... the drums overpowered all that good tone.

Hmm. An interesting comment. I guess mixing is like anything else, and everyone has an opinion. Many years later, I'm still very happy with the sound of both albums (although I'm biassed since I mixed or co-mixed them). Actually there are two different albums represented on the Badwolf site, one from '93 and one from '95. They sound very different from each other.

>All of them were really good, but "Where You Belong" was a total smoker.

Heh. Musical tastes again! Yeah, HTK is a pretty eclectic group. We move from blues, to funk, to really hard rock, to alternative. Makes it fun to play in the group because it pushes me to be a broader musician, and a more inclusive songwriter.

>What happened to that "Alanis" inspired tune? The sound quality seemed to have dropped off a bit on that one.

All those songs are, in fact, just writing demos that we whipped together, and not "real studio projects". We went in in an afternoon and cut them. The bass player and the drummer learned the tunes about an hour before we recorded them. It was just to give the singer an idea of how the song went. I admit that "Feeling Better" didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted it to (first of all, recording acoustic guitar using the piezo pickup is a BIG no-no). That's why I re-recorded it for my solo CD!

Thanks for the interest, and the input. I really appreciate it!

If you are trying to get that "Scorpions" sound... Heres how: Point a loaded gun between your eyes and pull the trigger...

P.S. The safety must be in the "off" position.

Yes, yes. "Your favorite band sucks". What a lovely, mature attitude for a BBS that shares recording tips. Lord knows nobody ever goes after that "Gibson humbucker into a cranked Marshall stack" sound. Heavens no!

Here's how to get that "Gibson humbucker into a cranked Marshall stack" sound:
Get a Gibson Les Paul with humbuckers and run it through a cranked Marshall stack...
Or get a POD and apply a "Tape saturation" plug-in...
Hope I helped.

To S8-N, I've read a number of your posts on this BBS and wonder, why are you here? You never have any viable input to any topic or question. From what I've read of your posts, you seem to be in more dire need of a blowjob than anyone I've ever known. Do you even record anything? Anyway I've got my loaded gun, now where do I point it? Between your eyes? OK! (I guess with a name like satan you would be an asshole)

Thanks to everyone else for positive input. When I get a finished product I'd like to get some comments/opinions.

Hey 'dripper...
At least I dont have to steal my putdowns from "Good Morning Vietnam"...
As a matter of fact I AM in dire need of a blowjob... Is your dad busy this weekend?
Also I believe that your post constitutes a "terroristic threat"... I'll have to see what the authorities have to say... Dont bother trying to edit it out... I saved the page.
Ever been to prison??? Be careful in the shower... Some of the bigger inmates just might "Rock you like a hurricane"...

Hyderipper, everyone is entitled to their opinions here, but with 6 posts how can u say S8-N's never had any "viable input".
BULLSHIT! Stick around, he might teach ya somethin one day...and the last ive checked, S8-N has posted many songs here, where the fuck are yours....
