Recording Software

I have a lot of old reel to reel tapes that I want to record on my PC. I have the tape deck attached and have used the sound card software from creative to record .wav files. The issue I would like to solve is the way the creative software handles the .wav files. I would like the software to automatically detect the gaps between the songs on the tape and create a new file for each song. I can do this manualy using the creative software, but can not find anyway to do this automaticly using the 'free' software. It does not seem to matter to the CD burning program that multiple songs are included in what it considers a 'track' on the CD it created from each input 'file', but for management purposes, I think it would be much better to store each song as an individual file. Can anyone recommend software that will meet my needs. Probably should be $100 or less.

The Spinster is right, Sound Forge is the way to go.

Thanks for the information but they offer at least two versions of sonic forge. the big one costs $350 and is too much for the simple thing I need to do. the other is sonic forge XP studio. I downloaded the manual and the demo version and can not find any reference to the product being able to automatically during the recording session create multiple files based upon the pauses between songs from the line input source. It appeared I could manually enter 'Marks' during the recording session or using the edit funtion, but that is not any better than what I can already do using the free recording software that came with my sound card. The product appears to be very complex for a 'nubie' with its own language. I am sure if I were a musician and really into editing, etc, it would all make sense. I also tried something I though would be very simple. I wanted to remove a partial song from the end of a file. I could not get the demo version to allow me to move forwards in the file and start playing. It always started from the begining and I could find no 'fast forward'. If I have missed something and you care to take the time to help me understand, I would be appreciative. I also would understand if this is beyound the scope of the forum. thanks for any help you are willing to give.

1) Highlight the area you want to remove, then press DELETE.

2) Press the PLAY LOOPED button (it looks like play, but with the infinity symbol after it). Then, place the cursor where ever and whenever you want to restart playing.

3) Cool, no problem.

4) It is not beyond the scope of this forum.
