Cloneboy, where in Maumee are you located? Do you have a studio there?

Its not for certain that they used sound replacer. But i do know its one of the big things now a days. But i was under the impression it was mainly used for smaller bands that couldnt afford the drumset. The guy who worked with the pre-production (actually, if i remember right he is the drummers brother, but i cant remember :D) is working at DML Studios and i know he loves to use sound replacer there when the band doesnt have a sufficient drumset. Its really hard to say. The last band that went to DML that i knew didnt use drum triggers or sound replacer on there drums, and they sound good. But he also had a nice drumset.

But it is true that those kind of tricks are being used more and more often. Infact he also used the a POD and mixed it with a real guitar sound. Which isnt bad idea really, but just kinda shows a little more on the emulation side. And i can see on the market side for the bands that dont have sufficient drums or guitar amps, its nice to make it so they dont sound like total crap. Gets more people coming to you. And also having beat detective! Its true that alot of bands out there could easily fake it.

What kind of help? What problems are you having? My strongest area as a recording engineer and mixer is my electric guitar sounds so I can probably help you out. After almost 20 years of playing guitar luckily I know my instrument pretty well and can dial something great in and capture it almost every time. Now drums still sometimes will make me work, but I can pretty much get good guitar sounds in about 10 minutes.

Well I can get a really great clean sound. Mic'ing or direct line. When I try to get distortion that a lot of the bands we are talking about here use the sound ends up a bit lacking in overall punch and other things i cant quite put my finger on.

Maybe i should double up this guitar part and im sure there are other things I could do. Heres a sample clip from the thing we did a while back. I could have done the clean part a lot better so I really only need help on the distorted part.

Thanks a bunch

On West John street. Not much more than a personal project studio in my house, I usually work out of local studios for other people's music.

Thats cool...I was just curious because I live really close to Maumee, and I wasn't aware of any studio in the area, at least not after a quick search of the Yellow Pages.

If you want to record let me know, and what you're budget is and we can work something out.

poor saosin, they broke up :( Lead singer left.

They'll find someone else - I wouldn't say he 'made' the band as such......

I would say he did. His voice was entirely too unique for them to replace him. There are many singers I would say oh yea, they could replace him easy, but he actually made that band unique. Otherwise they are just another posthardcore/screamo band from california.

cloneboy i posted a reply to your help with electric guitar including a sample if you still wanna help out.

thanks :)

that "distorted but clean" sound you get is the sound of mid 90's Mesa rectifier amps. Its a sound very hard to duplicate with any other amp. Those amps sound amazing on tape... even heavily distorted they still have so much tonal definition.

More importantly (in my opinion) is the Kick Drum. This is often overlooked when mixing, but forms the drive for both bands you have mentioned - espcially when double pedal is used. A good example of this is 'Blood Clots and Black holes' on the artist in the ambulnace by Thrice. This is the type of sound you should be aiming for.
yeah man, that thrice album sounds amazing. Its made alot of people take another look at how they compress/EQ bass drums. great advice too.

Damn Straight mmistudent - I have been using a POD II for my guitar sounds and it doesnt sound very very close to the pro sound, but still doesnt *quite* have exactly the right sound - it always takes a little EQ to get it right, which I hate doing. I find that it is the case with POD's and V-Amps on the whole though unfortunately.

The Rectifier sound is great though - I'd recomend it to everyone.

although i dont have the time right now to read the entire thread, I've recorded a few screamo bands, one of them being my own. I'd like to call us a "hit" in cincinnati for the year that we played together, haha.

anyway, I got some tracks i can send you over AIM if you want and we can chat on there.
AIM: THELBIGS or SHACKROCKRECORDS

Sorry i havnt got in touch with that guy yet. Its been a pretty busy week. Re-equipping your studio is a very difficult thing to do when you got clients on the line. The down time has been much more than i expected.

Just wanted to add that i tried my new Royer R-122 on distortion guitar a little the other day. It basically sounded identical to what you hear in the room. This was with the amp extremely loud and with the mic about 2 feet away off axis. I dont know if its always the best mic for the job, but if you have a great sounding amp and you want the natural sound you hear in the room, this is the mic to get. Sadly this mic is out of most peoples budgets :(.

Ill post some clips when i finish an album here with it.

sweet... maybe i could just borrow it for a few days? haha

Great thread! I also experiment a lot with getting good guitar sounds for this kinda music. I once recorded a song of Story Of The Year to test my guitarsound and I'm actually still quite happy with the sound I got on that mp3. I'm curious what you guys think of it, download it here if you want: Click.

And Rudalicious: My advice on your guitar sound, is to reduce gain and add bass a little on your amp. It sounds somewhat thin.

haha... that recording sounds pretty damn close man. I like it. Thanks for the advice. I think a better amp, more ecperiecne and everythign will help too. My studio partner is gettin a triple rectum frier soon. We are also plannin on getting a pod.

thanks for the tips and good job fiveyearslater. What kidna setup did u use to record this sample? Guitar, amp, mic, pre.

I used an Epiphone Les Paul -> Vox Cambridge 15 Watt -> Shure SM58 -> Delta44 -> Behringer UB1204-Pro -> Cool Edit Pro 2.0.

Ehm and the angle was 45 degrees, pointed to the side of the speaker. I used very little gain, less than half of the gain it has. I recorded 2 guitartracks, panned them L & R..

Hey guys post your emocore songs, and tell us how you recorded them.. I guess it's useful for many
